Default Bench Grinder Vibe

My 6" Delta bench grinder ran with very little vibration when I first got it. Now it vibrates so much it wants to walk off the bench. Can I true it back to good with a diamond "T" type wheel dresser?

If it's the wheel causing the vibration, dressing it should help. If it's the bearings or bushings, that's a different story.

Remove the wheel and run it to see if it runs smooth. If it does the bearings are probably okay so you probably need to true up the wheel or get a new wheel.

Dougs right on, my guess its the stone, might be able to true it up but it will be tough to do. If it runs smooth with stone off, I'd opt for a new stone, vibrating as much as you say could have put some internal stresses on the one you have on it. Further thinking tho, it may be the bushing between the arbor and the stone, sometimes they are plastic and very possibly will be the culprit, if so a new bushing may solve your problem- -Earl

After thinkimg about it I doubt if it would wobble because the wheel needs truing. That would not make the wheel wobble as the wobble comes from the center of the rotation, not the outside. I would suspect the bearings or possibly as stated above, the bushing. If the bearings are okay I'd try a new wheel.

Try truing, dressing your wheels. It should be done to newly replaced wheels also. Carve on.

Dave, that diamond "T" may work, but if the wheel is all but a little out of true, I'd go the extra few dollars at the hardware store for a wheel dressing tool. That has a bit larger handle and base than a "T" dresser.

The T's are used more for truing the surface than correcting for out of round.

Is the hole in the stone the same size or a tiny bit larger than the shaft? I had a polishing wheel where the hole was bigger and it ran great until it worked itself off center, because the hole was bigger and then it vibrated badly. Might need a new bushing in the wheel.

Preciate the input. Unit is less than two months old with minimal usage so I doubt it's bearings, runs smooth with coarse wheel removed. Will inspect arbor bushing. Archie, are you talking about that gizmo with the funny rotating spur at the end for truing?
