Default To Bark or Not to Bark

I’ve extolled the virtues of using bark in carving designs in responses in several earlier threads. I just finished this piece which I believe really emphasizes what I mean. The design is a slick bird head, which I call simply Raptor. This one is a 40 in. cane done in black sugar maple. The natural finish is hand rubbed Formby’s tung oil. On the left side of the head I was able to retain a depressed area of bark that I think really gives some character. Contrast it to the bare right side of the head and tell me which side you think has more appeal.

Neat carving.
The side with bark looks like the raptor has a floppy ear. IMHO

The first picture has more character something not everybody can show.to me ,the wood is so individual that I always leave it if it shows imperfections,

Definitely the left. The bark adds character to the piece without taking away from the carving. Very nice work.

Really nice, thank you for sharing. Geez I love bark...I think I'll change my sign-in name to Bark Lady...oh the left side for sure.

Hi David,

Another beautiful cane carving. There's no doubt the bark give contrast and character and lets our mind see more on the raptor's head.

Nice carving. I think the 2 sides work well together like that.

Love it both ways I think how ever you percive that it should be is just great. I have done many of these sticks and I just let nature dictate to me what should happen. Natural is always beautiful there is no way you could duplicate that no matter how hard you tired.

Thanks to all. I'm pleased that you agree. I always profess the motto, "Let the wood be wood!" If there is an imperfection that does not make the piece unstable, I try to work it into the design.
