My father showed me when i was a kid, how to use the unglazed bottom rim of a plate to sharpen knives - same thing. Ceramic of any type is harder than knife steel, and rough enough to get a pretty keen edge on a blade. I mentioned this in one of my first threads here I think.. Something about sharpening. Ive also used flat, smooth rocks when in a pinch. AJC

| I do have some calluses but I even if I didn't, I just make sure I draw the cutting edge away so that I can't get cut. I only do this if I am almost finished with a section and I don't want to bother taking it to the stropping wheel. I started doing this at a show when I forgot to pack my stropping gear. It works pretty well.
