| | yard sale find...Mifer gouges Hello,
does anyone here know anything about carving gouges made in Spain by the brand name of Mifer?
My husband called me from a yard sale he was at yesterday, mainly to have me bring him the truck but also to tell me that the man had done some carving a quite a lot of carving stuff was at the sale.
So, I hopped in the truck and drove over. There was a good amount of nice basswood, a Foredom Flex shaft unit with extra shaft, two hand pieces, a bench mount, a hanging mount, the lubricant, a couple of nice knives and many gouges...... One set of 12 in a wooden box had the name "Mifer" on them. They look like nice gouges but looks can be deceiving. There were also some palm gouges of the same brand. I am not getting much info through google.
There were also a couple of nice, large swiss made gouges, some nice Warren gouges too and one spoon bent that I couldn't find a name on but it looks like a good one.
The lady was not asking much and I just paid her without trying to get her down on the price.

| | Re: yard sale find...Mifer gouges Thanks for the link TN, that was somewhat helpful. I thought maybe they were not made anymore but it looks like they must be. This set doesn't look old, or abused. My main concern is, will they hold an edge?
I guess the only way to find that out is to try to put an edge on a tool and then use it for a bit to see how it holds up. Thanks again.

| | Re: yard sale find...Mifer gouges SuzieQ, If this helps, I've been using some Mifer carving tools for quite some time and they are a good quality tool. My actual carving tools consist of a variety of different tools I've collected over the years so I can give you some comparisons. I can't help you out much on the history of the maker other than made in Spain. I would rate them with Marples as kind of a comparison, they are definitely not junk. They hold a good edge and will serve you well. They won't last as long between sharpenings as an Addis, Taylor or Pfeil. If you got them at a good price, you did well. Sounds like the other stuff you got is quality also, I like the warren brand also. Hopefully this helps......Blake |
