| | Re: woodcarver of the year Gene is definitely in the running for the WCOY! He's up against some stiff competition, though.
The good news is, though, that Gene has agreed to do an article in the magazine (as soon as I have time to get the paperwork out to him...It's coming soon, Gene (and everyone else I'm supposed to get paperwork out to ...I'm just slammed with work right now).

| | Re: woodcarver of the year Bob, after reading that another thought popped in my head (and no, it was not lonely). I think you should consider more than one category. There are great carvers. I would never want to compete with the likes of Pete Leclair or any of the great carvers, on the merit of carving.
It is the free giving, the drive to teach new carvers, that should be recognized. I am sure the big guys teach. I took a class with Pete Leclair long before I was ready. It didn't do me a whole lot of good.
I have been carving for 13 years now and still learn things from Gene.
I realize it may increase the workload but how about the Instructor of the Year or something like that? Heck, Geme Messer is in a category by himself in my opinion, and obviously a lot of others.
Thanks for at least reading this.
Bob
ps I don't want your job no matter what it pays. And I appeciate your work. |

| | Re: woodcarver of the year Great idea, Bob! We'll definitely look at that for the future. Unfortunately, the deadline has already passed for this year.
LOL...I always tell people that I have my dream job. Deadlines are stressful, but it's all a lot of fun!

| | Re: woodcarver of the year Unfortunately, the deadline for 2008 nominations has passed (It was May 15). Gene was one of the nominations. If he isn't chosen as the Woodcarver of the year, you can nominate him again in 2009.

| | Re: woodcarver of the year Whoa Whoa there. Dang, it's gotta be Gene. I mean this guy just goes ahead and does his thing in front of a camera and away we new carvers go. Heck, in the short time I've been carving flat plane I've already been asked to sell one and would you believe my second is not quite finished and it's asked for, but probably won't sell it because I put so much into it. And it's all because of a fella I have never met other than I am a great friend of his hands. PLEASE really spend some time on your consideration of Gene Messer, to me, he's da man.

| | Re: woodcarver of the year Well I've had the opportunity to meet Gene and consider him a friend, and I agree that he should be the carver of the year. Gene puts forth 100% in educating carvers and his videos are nothing short of excellent. I refer to them every time I getting ready to carve a new project because I am always able to pick up something or remember something that I need to do in the carving process. I agree, Gene deserves all the credit in the world. Gene, I think I speak for everyone on this board, you have been a gift from God to carvers everywhere, and the work you produce and the videos you post just for the sake of education is amazing. You my friend have gone above and beyond to help others and I commend you for all that you do to help others! I'm truly grateful to be able to call you my friend!
