Default Women

I went to a local woodcarving club meeting recently. It was the first time going to this club.
I was asked 3 times what type of carving my husband does.
My husband doesn't carve and he wasn't at the meeting with me. I just thought that was so curious. Do the ladies here belong to woodcarving clubs? Or do you for the most part stay to your self and find woodcarving comradery on the internet.

Hi Jodyb,
I am often asked if my husband sharpens my tools for me. He can't sharpen a stick.
I started my own "woodcarvers gathering" and there are more men who attend than women.
On the bright side, I just had a two weekend workshop in my studio and taught four women how to carve. Woohoo!
I think you will find enough comaraderie between both genders here to make up for any curious comments. We all pick up our tools one at a time.

Funny! At almost every show we attend I am constantly ask if my wife paints my carvings! While she doesn't could this be a genetic thing where the fellas are supposed to do the carving and the wives to apply apply the paint? Granted, the female sex is certainly more experienced at applying paint, i.e., lipstick, makeup, etc., and the guys somehow always get handed the carving tools at the Thanksgiving table so if we accept this train of thought then the boys can relax, set in the shop and whittle while the wives can get the ladder, paint and brush and go out and freshen up the exterior of the building! If she needs any help she can always tap on the window. Just don't do it if he's taking a nap! Don't want him to cut himself!

Actually Christina...ha...I pick mine up in 3's and 4's But are we surprised?!
After years of attending faires, I am still asked that question. It used to rankle me, but now I laugh and say ask my husband who in turn laughs and says no.
We have rules at our house...you stay out of my tools and I will stay out of yours...He, luckily keeps his in his truck...where they are safe...
Carving is not a male female art, it is a human art, a people of all walks of life art.
I for got to mention that when a man asks me that while he is with his wife, if I am not on my best behavior, I ask him if his wife dressed him This ALWAYS makes the wife laugh.
This forum is so full of support and good folks, man and woman. Its good to meet you Jodyb! Welcome!

Well said! It is notgender-specific. My wife make pottery and she is often asked if I make pottery. I carve, but I have never been asked if my wife carves.

There are some things a female is good at and then there are some things they aren't. There are some things a male is good at and then there are some things they aren't. How is that for politically correctness? LOL
