Talking Why I haven't Carved recently

I said on a post recently I was sawing up some very large mahogany blocks into turning stock. Well here are some pics of what I made from a peice, it is over 3" inside diameter and about 5" tall. It is mahogany don't know what species, and the finial is Kingwood which will turn more purple and vibrant after some oxidation in the sunlight. I finished it with beeswax, earth friendly and plentiful, also smells nice.Talking I worked on this on and off over the last few days while I have been waiting for my new tools Jester and carving vise to get here. Tell me what ya think, thats a 6" straight edge there for scale.

Thanks Ron I put alot of time and effort into my turning, and I know my great grandpa can see me working on these lidded boxes. I have some he made many years ago out of black walnut on a home made lathe with home made tools. This is where my interest in turning started, it can be even more adicting then carving, also its fun to take a peice of wet birch and see how long of a shaving I can make, no joke I have made one over 40 feet long.

It takes a bit of time to get such a scratch free finish, sanded up to 600 then I use my secret technique to add the finish. I hear ya Forrest and it is very hard to resist carving on my turnings, but I have to many irons in the fire and i'll just keep them seperate for now.

Nice turning...I have a small Jet variable speed lathe, haven't done much but a few little things and several pens...its fun tho. How does that mahogany carve?
