Looking to buy DH a nice duck call. I googled and found some sites, but would kind of like some recommendations. I want to keep it under $ 50. Thanks! Don't know much about duck calls, but he mostly hunts for Mallards - if it matters? |

I have turned a couple for fun have not tested them to see if they work but they look nice and my dad said they make the proper noises. If you want I cant take pictures of some I have made I have one I am working on right now that is Birdseye maple and African Blackwood. Carl

Here are two I have finished and sitting in my shop Cocobolo and the other one is soft Maple burl and African Blackwood. They are both single reed calls one is a metal and the other plastic I do have some double reed metal calls, Canadian goose, and a wood duck call. They are finished with a soak in melted beeswax so they are pretty much impervious to water and they have two rubber O-rings to ensure a tight leak free fit. Carl

We like the looks of the purplish wood composite, second from the left (cut in two pieces already). DH is thinking he would prefer a single reed call...

To me the single reed sounds like a lower tone and the double reed is more nasally and buzzy. The wood is called strata bond the more purply color is called Royal Jacaranda, the more yellow one is Desert camo the call pictured is made from the desert camo. If you have a final wood selection, reed selection, and idea on the shape let me know when your ready, if you would like to order one I will make it. Carl

Here it is I hope it is the correct shape I follow your dimensions and made it the same style as the Cocobolo one, the Purple heart will still be this color for a few days until it gets enough light then it will be more like the color shown in the picture of blocks. Carl
