Default I want to know

Is there some unwritten rule that caricatures have to be uglier than homemade soap?

...not sure why you ask but...

...in simplest terms caricature is just the exaggeration or dimishing of distinct features...if you are carving Jimmy Durante his probiscus is the feature you would exaggerate...

...its up to the artist as to how much to exaggerate or diminish each feature...

...never seen anything about ugly in a definition of a caricature but I can imagine features being distorted to the point ugliness comes into play...

...so now why do you ask Doug???

Yeah, Rocket I know what they are but I just wonder sometimes why so many of them look like they are ugly to the bone. Looks like we could exaggerate features without going quite so far.
Hi Ho, you know the old saying about people, Beauty is only skin deep, but Ugly goes all the way to the bone.

Yeah - why can't we get caricatures that exaggerate all the BEAUTIFUL aspects. Now let's take an example . . . Pamela Anderson . . .

Oh wait - her aspects are already exaggerated. ;-)

Doug:
I don't call them ugly, they just have a little more attitude then others,a word of thumb, their is no rules on caricatures.

Doug,
The carvings I do that have the best results in competition are ones with faces that are challanged ;O). I don't personally beat them with an ugly stick but perhaps that would save me some carving time. To answer your original question, caricatures don't have to be ugly, but they look so much better than just another pretty face ;O).

You know how the song goes..."Make an ugly woman your wife...be happy the rest of your life!!!" So marry a carricature....or was that character? Anyway, sorry girls, I couldn't help myself. I just had to throw that in!
