| | Re: Veterans Day Thanks to all the other veterans out there. I was on USS Charles Berry DE1035 and USS Kearsarge CVS33 as a midshipman, then starting in 1966 the USS Ticonderoga CVA14, USS Durham LKA114, USS New Oleans LPH11, USS Denver LPD9. Left the Navy in 1976. I have no regrets about having served.

| | Re: Veterans Day As a former navy seabee myself, I would like to say thanks to all the seabee personell who aid the navy and marines in the war in Iraq.I say this because seabees are doing there best just like guy on the front lines but no one knows who we are.Our modo is "WE BUILD WE FIGHT".I am proud of everyone there fighting for our freedom.I make no apologies but to support our troops. you may not believe in the the policy wonk but we have young men and women there who volenteered who think there are doing the right thing thing. At 45 I would go in a minute.I am sorry, this is a sensative subject for me and my wife who is also is a navy veteran. My flag flies by my mail box until the war is over.Davy |

| | Re: Veterans Day November 11, is Rememberance Day here in Canada, when we remember our vets, peacekeepers, soldiers, sailors and airmen/women, all former and active serving service ranks. We owe them much and could never fully repay their service.
Serving doesn't seem as popular these days, a sad reminder of the changes in our society, from a time when we were proud to serve, to a generation who wishes to be served. Thankfully there are many fine men and women who are still proud to answer the call!
My respects to the other fine men and women here in the group that have served. My thanks for your efforts and sacrafice.
I come from a long line of soldiers and sailors, in my own family: Grandfather served in both WW1 (Royal Corp of Pioneers)and WW2 Canadian Army (Veteran Guards), my Father RCN (H.M.C.S.'s Louisburg, Trois Rivieres and St, Catherines), brother Allan, Captain still on active service (C.F.B. Aldershot), brother John (ex-signalman Peacekeeper in Cyprus), sister Cathy, (ex-officer reserve) and me.....go Navy, ex-sonar rate (H.M.C.S.'s: Assinaboine, Kootenay, Qu'Appelle, Fraser, Margaree, Ottawa, and St. Laurent.) | | Re: Veterans Day ...something bothers me though, why is their a Veterans Day holiday but us veterans still have to work while our government gets the day off!!! I guess it is not for me to understand.
Interesting idea about the medals, but only served in peace time so not too many.
To all our current servicemen I salute your service and am honored to call you 'brother'. |

| | Re: Veterans Day Being a veteran, Navy 22 years, I thank everyone for the rememberances. Also as an active American Legion member I am involved with veterans issues and activities in our community. Yesterday I had the priviledge of going to a Veterans Day program at the local middle school. The program was put on by 5th,6th,7th, and 8th graders. What a moving and inspirational program it was. The students had made autograph books and they had seated us at tables and the students came through by each grade and asked us to sign their books. I signed my name for over an hour. If you want to see how the children of today are being taught, go to a local school function! I was an aircraft structural mechanic and when I retired, I had been on every carrier on the east coast. My last ship was USS Nimitz. The Vets of today are treated a lot different from the way we were when I came back from my 2 cruises to Nam. The community is having a groundbreaking ceremony today for the New Veterans Memorial that they raised over $100,000 for. The dedication will be on Memorial Day 2007. I also have a Veterans dinner to go to at the Legion tonight. The Director of the VA has asked vets to wear their medals on all Holidays honoring Vets, the country etc. The Legion has a type of "uniform that we wear, gray slacks, white shirt, tie and a blue blazerand our cap. I have my medals mounted on my blazer and it does generate a lot of interest from people who are not Vets. |

| | Re: Veterans Day Thanks Capt and I am ashamed I didn't mention the VA, the DAV and the VFW...I am a life member of the VFW...have not joined the American Legion....and no reason for not doing so, but recommend all vets join one of the veterans organizations, they do great work.. I will most likely join the DAV as I drive for them anyway ! And the VA, what can we say about them, they help vets all over the country, they do an outstanding job, and you can hear of things that didn't go right just as with everything and every endeavor.....but they do a terrific job.....I want to thank each veteran again and those groups mentioned....this would be a cold world without them! |

| | Re: Veterans Day My heartfelt thanks go out to all past and current (and future!) members of the armed services, no matter what country you belong to.
An old saying from WW1 comes to mind; Loose lips sink ships
. Whatever happened to that?
I know about the public's "right to know". Certainly, allow the press boys access to figures and stats on how the war is proceeding, allow them - on a short leash - into combat areas. But do not, ever, allow the press - or the general public - to have any say in how the war is being fought. It is not them who is putting their a** on the line! Plus, they rarely see the entire picture. All the press is interested in is something to sell ads or maybe win an award. They have little or no interest in the war itself except as to how it can further their career.
War is a brutal thing, that CANNOT be won by being polite and civilized. Those who bring war upon themselves CANNOT cry foul and go running to the newspapers and cry about how mean everybody is.
The stupidest thing that happened in this current war is when they found ![001[1]3424](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/001[1]3424.gif) dam, they should have shot him on the spot. Now the "insurgents" will have a "martyr" to rally 'round, and the rope that breaks ![001[1]3424](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/001[1]3424.gif) dam's silly neck will become a holy relic.
Gaaah, why'd I get going on this? Sorry for venting.
I am behind the men and women of the armed services 120%. Do your job, people, knowing that there is at least one citizen that is proud of you! |
