Could I get some feedback on this one? I have created a few well exicuted pieces for erotic art shows. They have been well recieved by the public. Would they be appropriot(sp) on this fourm? I am hesitant to post for fear of offending fellow carvers. The subject is quite phalic in nature. "Ivory King" Hollywood Root, Cottonwood Root Burl, Turquoise. "El Sembradore" Cottonwood Root, Pearls "Pole Dancer" Cottonwood, A-poxiesculpt medium. For those curious these pieces can be seen on my web page Thank-You I would love any and all feedback Russell Last edited by RoundRiver; 09-07-2006 at 02:18 PM. |

Round River, Thanks for asking before you post. I admit that the human form is very attractive, but I'm afraid that our readership in general is very conservative. We've recieved complaints about some of Ian Norbury's sculptures that we featured in the magazine. The link is perfectly acceptable, and carvers are more than welcome to offer you feedback here on the message board, but I'd prefer if you didn't post the actual images here. Does that make sense? Thanks for understanding. Bob Duncan Technical Editor |

I agree, we also have young people that will be exposed to different things soon enough, not necessary on a wholesome carving forum imho, actually think the site should be removed from the post....again imho

Russell, I have admired your web site and appreciation for the original form of wood in sculptures before. The phalic symbol has been used in artwork for many centuries and in many cultures. Where I don't find your work offensive, my one comment would be that there is a certain sentiment that is redundant in the use of the "highlight" placed in a position of an obvious nature. It's sort of an "of course" thing that just doesn't give the viewer credit. Less being more applies very well when using abstract forms to hint at literal. It shows that these are sculptures that were involved pieces, and are unlike your other series. Thor |

There is some areas that this type of art, is well received. Personally, I am not one of them. Nuff said!

Russell, I like it. I think your forms are simple, clean smooth flowing lines. However, I will back those that wish to avoid this style of artwork on this particular forum. This fourm tends more towards the hobbiest and craftsman than the fine artist. I am not saying Fine Artists are in any way above or superior, but as a fine artist I, as Thor, was trained to include art styles as yours in our portfolio. Both nudity and sexuality have always been topics for fine artists ... look at Rodin or David by Michaelangelo. We, at WCI tend to be more wood spirits, canes and fun little cowboy dudes! I would suggest that you check out www.WetCanvas.com which is a fine arts forum and has a great sculpture area and and exrotica area for posting. I'll look for you over at Wet Canvas!!!! This looks very similiar to alot of japanese art i have studied. They actually have entire public parks dedicated to wood sculpture of this genre. Any way nice work and in other countries this would not be seen as anything inappropriate. so do not feel like you mis stepped. Other forums dedicated more to wood sculpture on an international basis would probably really enjoy seeing this type of work. Anyway nice work and good call on your desgretion before just posting.

Wow!, What a great responce. I appreciate all of your points of view. These pieces are part of a very deliberate series hence the lack of mystery. I enjoy so much this fourm, and have the greatest respect for you all. Susan, thanks for the link! I'll Check it out. Thor, thanks for the constructive words. Silver, Whats imho?...And I would be glad to remove the link. |
