| | Things I notice about my parents. Years ago when both parents were alive and I was young and at home, My father was a hard working man who had oil wells and was out before daylight and back about dark.
Well this one time, we were sitting at the supper table and Dad was asking how each one of our days went and we told him. Well this time after everyone told him, There were my brother, Mmother and I. Dad said between bites,' Anna, I didn't like those JAM sandwiches you sent in my lunch pail today". Mom looked sheepish and said,' I didn't send you any JAM sandwiches today.
Well dad was and even tempered man and after sallowing his food, he said, "you sure as hell did, ya JAMed the Bread together without any meat".
True story so help me GOD. |

| | Re: Things I notice about my parents. Food Stories, I love ‘em I was Principal of a Junior High of 750 students for 7 years and as we bused 90%of our students in we had a large hot lunch program which received government subsidies. When Carter was President we got peanuts! They were in gallon cans, six cans to a case stacked 7 high per pallet. I bet I’ve seen peanuts used in more way than most people have even thought about. Also we recieved Sweet Potatoes which only a few students would eat. Then the baker found a way to use the Sweet Potatoes in the roll and bun dough. He called them Butter Rolls & Buns, Kids couldn’t get enough. We were also able to affect a minor medical miracle. We were aware that our students were throwing away way too much food and the food services director was concerned about this. To make a long story short (?) we researched and found that some schools were following the fast food theme, serving hamburgers, fries and shakes. If done correctly it meets the hot lunch program standards for nutrition. Many of our students didn’t want to drink the milk that was served with the lunch and if you could get doctors note stating that you were allergic or whatever the school had to substitute fruit juice. We had 3 lunch periods and there were at least 25/35 students who received the juice substitute at each lunch. When we intuited the new lunch program with milk shakes we got requests stating that it was now fine for their child to have the dairy product, it completely eliminated the need for the juice substitute. I though wow this is real medical news. I wrote to a couple of the doctors whose notes we had on file, only got one return, he mentioned that I had some of the same SA attitude as my adolescent students. Ed |

| | Re: Things I notice about my parents. Don't get me started on School Lunch programs. My little bride was ateacher for years and the stories, well, Don't get me started. I will say not all of the stories were from the kids!!!!!
with a lot of parents going to the school board, we found out , they protect their own.
Elections of school boards happens and sometime a big shake up.
Now, with a new board, school supperindentent, new high, middle and elementary pricipals and some new teachers, things are a lot different.
Kids can eat the food. Seems that the teachers and higher muckity mucks did not eat the same foods as the children.
Like I said don't get me started. |

| | Re: Things I notice about my parents. Ed, That response wasn't meant to offend you just stating what had happen in our local school system.
I know when I was in grade school, I belive a one room log structured building, not really, but the food was ok, then jr high and the food was tolerable, then hig school, the pig farmers came in to get the left overs for their pigs. heard tell they didn't eat it either.
Yes, School administrator should try different ideas and program.
Like I said in my last post, The kids at all three levels do eat now but too, there is a lot of waste still yet.
But Boiled turnips?????? No dang way! |

Geez ..mashed or diced "neeps" (turnip to the non Scottish types), are a staple of life along with oatmeal porridge , never hurt my growth and I still look forward to a feed of neeps even though it's more than 70 years since my first taste of them. You don't like neeps! Great glad to hear it, all the more for me. .
