| | Thank you Susan Irish and a hidden tutorial I had originally typed this as a thank you to Susan Irish to be posted to the “Learnin and Unlearnin” thread. Then I realized that this thread has taken a turn, as many do, and become even truer to the title than my original posting. Considering the number of replies, the number of views and the life expectancy of a thread there is a danger that someone will miss a superb tutorial. This led me to post it as a new thread. Before anything else, I must thank Susan for her willingness to help the members of this forum. I had followed her assisting others, Squarebrigg’s with his pub sign immediately comes to mind. However, when I posted my WIP I expected a suggestion or two at most. I certainly got more! Susan, your active participation on this board illustrates the wisdom of your choice as a WCI Carver of the Year. Thank you, for this posting and for the continued support you offer all of us. On to the tutorial…….. In posts #20 through #23 Susan Irish has explained, graphically, the use of colored pencils. This mini-tutorial is done in a fashion that it is also a lesson on the use of color as an enhancement to a carving It illustrates how color can become an integral part of the carving rather than the carving becoming a support for the addition of paint. I have been painting all of my carvings and will still paint some of them. I decided to try a little pyrography as a lark. More to show those asking me to finish some pieces “with the wood showing”, that “it don’t work as well as painting”, Susan’s tutorial has opened my eyes to the possibility of finishing some pieces leaving the wood showing. |

I'll keep it where it is to keep the continuity of the thread, but pull out a copy and post it as a new thread. I don't want that to get lost! I learned a lot from it!!!

| | Re: Thank you Susan Irish and a hidden tutorial Paul, you are so right! Susan has been there for us all ...... encouraging, teaching, helping, guiding and offering her expertise in a host of ways. I have been amazed how patient she has been, dealing with dull witted, clumbersome, and amateur carvers such as yours truly! Yet she takes the time to guide us through and continues to encourage us to our best. Thank you Susan, you are a gem indeed and we are proud of you and your accomplishment ..... Wood Carver of The Year!

| | Re: Thank you Susan Irish and a hidden tutorial Bob: Even better would be your publishing a book "a compilation of all the tutorials from this website" and either use it as your prize for taking a 2-year subscription to WCI or just as a new book which can be purchased and used as a reference. I would be most happy to purchase said book if it was available. I am having a terrible time trying to keep all of these tutorials in my "Favorites" site.
