Why don't you post what you have done so we can enjoy watching you finish the carving ... Please!

Hello Gary. Now I see what your're doing. I've always been facinated by examples of the laser carvings I have seen.Met a guy when I was first starting out years ago who offered everything from business cards cut in wafer thin cherry with logo's to large portraits. One thing he couldn't do that you seem to be able to do is add more relief to the pieces. I am curious as to how much you think is possible ? And how important is the type of wood used? eg. soft/hard woods, grain structure etc.and how it affects the outcome? Just last Wed. I was in a shop where he had examples of tracery and fretwork in fairly thick stock that couldn't be done with the finest scroll saw blade,, nor as accurately,,do you plan to get into this as well?Interesting work and directions this can go in.Best of luck to you.

Mark,
Yes different woods make a difference, I know I can cut through a 7/8 inch piece of poplar like it was nothing And I can detail it to an increadable level.

With proper control Mark and correct patterns , I think 5/16 - 3/8 of an inch is quite feasible with consistancy. And it can be done on a round so with a proper pattern and layout , you could get some impressive in the round pieces.

And yes the trace pattern cutout is too easy to pass , up. One of the first things we did was make drumsticks , customized band name and logo. But that is almost another world from the work that was done for Susan's first piece here.

I guess kind of like , grade school and college.. they might be the same basic concept but the difference is a world apart.

Oh I'm sure they are,, the technology is amazing,,,this from a guy who has trouble posting some pics. and makes a living with a mallet an chisel,,,welcome to the 21st century Mark! But I can see it now,the future of band saws and table saws,,laser cuts for accuracy never before imagined!!Bet too they could take off a finger just as quick,, but seal the blood vessels as they do it!

Ours was a white Dodge station wagon with a seat in the back that faced backwards. It was GREAT when we were headed over the West Virginia mountains to go visit Grandma ...

Mine was a knock down drag out fight to see who was going to sit by the window. Usually all 5 of us boys were in the back. Fight's didn't last long though dad had long arms.

Susan,

I am really sorry things have been a bit crazy here , and I was not able to get the piece in the mail .

But I will make it up to you , By sending you the second piece with the first.

This is the Ap copy will finish your tomorrow.

Hope you like it.

Ash

Oh for those that did not know Susan is a rather unique art collector. This is a piece she allowed me to do as a 3-d carving of a painting she did in 1997 ,

It is a wizard head inside a flying dragon , in a star nebula . This is our approved production piece, as soon as she approves it. It is is a piece of cherry taken from a West Virginia tree 32 years ago and given to me by a retired schoool teacher.

Susan ,

We added the final finish on the pieces today.
I will be sending you a box tomorrow, there will be 6 of your patterns in it. The Asian dragon , your Owl , the dog , the wizard and stardragon , the spirit chief , and the double Pegasus .

I hope you like them all. now just to be special , I want to show you the stardragon is the spalted maple. This is no 2 of the pattern . Your number one is in a different wood which came out better than this one.

Garry
