American Artist has a magazine called "Drawing". They have many articles on the old masters and their techniques.

They have a special issue on the bookstands right now called "Drawing Highlights", this issue is almost an entire course on drawing the human figure.

If you're interested in drawing these magazines are a must have.

Here's my rendition of Gustave Courbet's self portrait shown in "Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain" p.197. We used this book in a college drawing course that I took a couple of years ago.

It was done in charcoal.

YES !,,there's a classic,,very well done! Remember everyone,,it's not how good your sketching ends up,,it's the process,an exercise if you will,,you're retraining those muscles and your eyes,,and it can be relaxing along the way,,it will ultimately help all facets of your art and carving, pattern making, seeing the forms better instead of at times just poking at the block because you don't know where to cut next.If the image isn't fixed in your mind,,you can't "fix" the image in the wood and you stall at times and carve with less confidence...with confidence though,,you go right after the image and can't wait to get all the junk out of the way to see your carving. Here thinking actually gets in the way but that's what we do day to day,,not so much so in art.Day to day problems are usually solved in the head,,carving comes from the heart...
