I don't know what it is. I can never put my finger on it, but I feel something. I feel the cool air and these last of summer early autumn soft breezes blowing in and I feel something. There is a calling to just take my coffee and go outside. To walk around my place, or any place and soak it in. Am I storing up on the last vestiges of summer and preparing for a long winter? Everything has an acute interest for me, lines in leaves are much more pronounced, grooves in acorns and much more significant. I don't know what it is, but I definitely feel something. The sky is almost a neon turquoise blue and it almost forces me to angle my head up to see those fat crisp white clouds against its radiant backdrop. I breath in these magnificent smells and memories and wonder just what is it that makes me feel this way ? I have an undeniable urge to capture a part of it to treasure, any small part of this sheer perfection to take it and hold on to it, just something. My mind and my heart are working together and are pulling extra hours of imagining and creating. The two together are a workforce that never lets me sleep. I cannot be held responsible when they take over. I don't know why or what, but something drives me. SOmething is driving me to create and to hole up. Something says gather your family close, hug your babies and be at peace. I don't know what this feeling is, but I like it. I have my tools, my ideas, my heart and my incredible little man hands. I think I am ready for winter, bring it on.

Yes,Keoma, the late season air has special gifts for us. It will hold until the "MUD" season rolls around, anyway. Al |

The winds of fall and winter. My neighbors burning bush is already turning red. Does that mean an early winter? Trees in my area are also beginning to turn. JimB |

Keoma, you got it right as the geese are already flying your way. Alot of our basswood and maples are dropping their leaves. Beautiful harvest weather and you ae right about the coffee (on the deck in a warm sweater). Nice time of the year.

The seasons here in Florida, are vague....summer runs into Winter here..... You can "smell" a difference in the air and it's welcome, but right now we still have mid 90s and it's humid as heck. I do see the leaves on the trees beginning to look "sickly" and become sparse, with a few on the ground now. No wonderful fall colors here, I'm afraid.... But, the first bald eagle arrived back at their nest last Thursday. The nest is about 350 ish feet from our back door on a cell tower. I asked the Audubon guy who I report to about the nest every year, and he says that the male comes back first to secure the nest site. Today the second eagle arrived. Last year they came in October. They're early. The Audubon guy also told me that the eagles have returned to the other nests in our area so it's not just this pair. We had a most unusual winter here in Florida last season. Freezing and near freezing weather for 2 solid months. I always hope for some cold weather in the winter but last year I was telling myself, "Susan, be careful what you wish for". We burned nearly our whole store of oak firewood and have only gotten a little more back in this year. If the eagle's early return means anything...we might need some more firewood. LOL. Enjoy your fall colors and that special smell in the air...that crispness.... I haven't been down here so long that I forgot that smell.... |

I was thinking of today-how I feel when I am in my place to carve. I see people go to the Gardens to paint and go to the ocean to sketch and take photo's...there is more to a place than the view. Of this I am certain. Today it came to me-when I stand in my shop, able to see everything around me, to feel the breeze, to smell the sun and earth, all this funnels down and directly into me. The channel is open and I download all of this instant Zen. That's when I do my best works, when everything else disapears and I am funneling my surroundings from everywhere down into my hands...it's an awesome feeling.
