Default Senior Moment - Help!

I am having a senior moment ... I want a dowel jig that resizes the diameter of a dowel rod. It has pre-drilled sharpened holes where you force the dowel through each hole, slowly working towards a smaller diameter, until the dowel has the new desired dimension. Each new smaller hole shaves off just a touch of wood, reducing the size of the dowel.

I have searched under dowel, dowel jig, and spoke shave but all I come up with is either dowel centering pins or a centering jig for the drill....

Help! Name that jig. Please!!!!

Susan

(I know when someone tells me I am going to feel so very stupid for not thinking of it myself ...

I believe Lie Neilson tool Works has dowel plates.

Lie Neilson tool works.com
I think this is the web site, at least it will get you close enought to find it.

Yes - dryheat is correct. Lie-Nielsen is also carried by Woodcraft.
www.woodcraft.com -- LIE-NIELSEN DOWEL PLATE -- Item # 823413 -- $44.99
I "know" I've seen a different, cheaper one in a different catalog but, of course, I can't remember or find it.

I have L-N's dowel plate. It is not easy to use.

There is quite a bit of wood that has to be removed between dowel sizes and it is hard to keep the dowel centered in the hole to get a perfect circle.

The grain in the dowel has to be perfectly straight and it requires a lot of force to pull the dowel through the hole.

It does excell in making small length dowels to use as plugs using a mallet to drive the wood through the hole.

I would suggest making your own out of a piece of metal flat stock.

Thank you everyone!!!!

Nancy, which catalog? I am resizing bamboo and hardwood knitting needles and that one looks perfect with it's slow progression through the sizes.

Thanks again, everyone.

Hi Susan

I figured I'd answer your question to help you speed things up a bit.

Oh, Susan I thought that was a big mistake on small dowels because it starts on 1/16" dowels.

It's in Micro-Mark -- www.micromark.com 800-225-1066
340 Snyder Avenue Ave., Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922-1595

Micro-Mark sells the most wonderful stuff -- it's so much fun -- but the prices aren't.

When I need a tiny dowel I ~blush~blush~ use a tooth pick soaked in thin super glue for strength. But they are NOT made from straight grain or strong wood.
