Default Protecting Tiger Wood

Morning from the windy city. I have a customer who has a deck with Tiger Wood and wants to know how to protect it and and with what?

If it were a more common less exotic wood I would tell him just to use what he has, but I want to be safe.

Any suggestions, tips,or ideas?

You may get some good advice from this site, but generally speaking, these folks (myself included) are carvers and not professional builders.

At the risk of getting in hot water here, might I suggest you try that wood WORKING site at Wood Magazine. They used to have a carving forum but gave it up...they still have one of the best sites I've found for general wood working and building, though. Their finishing forum can be found here.....http://dgroups.woodmagazine.com/n/pf...oodrefinishing

Shodojack,
I am thinking you might want to check "Consumer Reports" for this. I read a pretty good article on this some years ago.
Years ago; I worked for a Chevron Jobber and we sold a product called "Shingle Oil" or maybe " Shake and Shingle Oil". It was really nothing more than a light oil [probably mineral oil] with some flame retardant. It was very simple and inexpensive. We sold tons of it to happy customers, in fact the Prescott store got it in by the truckload, which would be about 20 tons a whack. I got hold of a bit of it and used it around the house like boiled linseed oil with good results.
Unfortunately it may be hard to find now; but my point is that you might want to find a simple product like that to use. I believe there is a company "DuxBack" ? selling something like this now; also maybe Behr.
One trick you might want to bear in mind is that if the wood is very dry, lay a bit of water on the deck the night before and that way the oil will lay on top and let the wood breath, instead of the wood just soaking up oil and getting real dark.

One thing I am pretty sure about is that you do not want to use that product that is available at every hardware store and advertises on TV pretty heavily as being the best. I am blanking on their name right now. I have heard complaints that it turns chalky. I also know my neighbors deck is shot after about 25 years of using that product.
Good Luck.
Jim

He used tigerwood on a deck ? Wow ok I am not sure if I am amazed or just stunned.
That deck I am sure is beautiful. I would make sure you tell him to get a lot of photos as soon as it is finished.

He needs a excellent water repellent and UV protection or he will be very upset very soon, as the sun will try to bleach it and the water try to warp it. I think Sikkens makes a deck coating that has both. A bit expensive but the lost of that deck would be more so.

Boy, saw this thread and just knew Tiger Woods was hanging up his golf clubs and taking up woodcarving, or was going to read a neat golf story. There I go thinking again. Gets me in trouble everytime.

Marine spar varnish. This is the stuff sailing ships use to protect exposed wooden surfaces. Should work equally well on Tiger Woods, but it may interfere with his putting ability.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Seriously though, Marine spar varnish.
