| | Not Carving.....But It's Wood! Still more excuses for not carving.....here's a flag box I just finished for the burial flag of the father of a good friend. Made of pine and finished with medium stain and poly. I made several of these years ago and since then the flags have gotten somewhat larger and of lighter material that doesn't seem to fold as well, so it's a bit more difficult to fit. Axel served in the U.S. Navy WWII, and was a member of the American Legion, so his hat is there and three shells fired at his military funeral. As soon as I get his dates of birth and death and military service info I'll have a small plaque made up and placed to the left of the hat. Sure hope Jeanie likes it...she won't be back up here till around the 4th.

That is very nice of you to build that nice box for the family and carving can take many forms.
Thanks for posting the photos.

| | Re: Not Carving.....But It's Wood! That is a great thing that you did. I am sure that she will treasure it for many years to come. You could always carve the USN insignia and place it near the hat.

| | Re: Not Carving.....But It's Wood! Thanks....I've done abut half a dozen of these for friends and relatives, starting with my dad's. He served in both WWI (USMC) and WWII (USN).
When we visited DC about 12 years back, we stopped in a little shop in Alexandria, VA and picked up several 2 1/2" brass millitary service medalians, USMC and USN for Dad's and Karen's dad's box.....should've picked up more but didn't think at the time. Also we had a guy here who did photo engraving on brass plates for really nice plaques......he moved and no one around here does that any more. I did a drawing of the DE USS Eben that Karen's dad served on with my old AutoCad (that died too) and added that to the base of his box.
I have one more to do for my old boyhood Scoutmaster, and then I'm done with these for a while.....I hope.
