Default New Year Traditions

As kids we started some strange new year traditions.
A friend and I always took a dip in the creek between our farm house on New Years Day. Did not stay long in the water but it was a tradition, not to be broken. One year it was exceptionally cold, but not to be deterred. We broke the ice, about a quarter of an inch thick, had second thoughts, built a fire and jumped in. The water was so cold we litterly bounced out. I think that may have been the last year we tried that. Those were the days when parents let their kids go off alone on the creek or into the distant pasture to camp out in the snow.
I bet some of you can top that one.
Happy New Year!
Charlie

My husbands family always fixes a pot of white bean soup on New Years day.
We really didn't have any except to say, "Haven't seen you since last year!"
Kind of boring! Your story was great Charlie.
Happy New Year to everyone!
I forgot, my dad and everyone else in the neighborhood would shoot a rifle off at midnight.
Everyone in our neighborhood still shoots off guns at midnight!

I don't remember any traditions . I lived in Hancock N.Y. as a kid and I am sure Charlie would consider me a chicken as even then I disliked cold.
My wife did fix cabbage and black eye peas New Years day she said it was suppose to bring luck. Don't think it is a tradition though.
