| | New Scam Alert!! Late yesterday afternoon I received a call from a man who said he was with Medicare. He stated that they getting ready to send out new Id cards and needed to verify my information. The first clue that it was a scam was he started telling me all the new benefits like no monthly premeim and no need for supplimental insurance because the new medicare would cover it all. Then came the time when he asked for my bank and my routing and account number and also my social security no. When I refused to give the information he said my social security benefits would be suspended. I said that being with the federal government he would already have my information so if he would read it back to me I would verify it naturally he refused accused me of possibly scamming the government. I said well you called me I didn't call him but if he would give me his name and phone I would be glad to call him back(naturally after I called the real feds)but then he refused and said my benefits would be suspended I just said go ahead and hung up. I did also give a call to the Social security Inspector generals office and gave them the information. They also told me of the latest scam of people calling and saying they are with the treasury department and are wanting to speed up the process of getting the incentive checks out faster. But they want you to give them the same information stating it will be deposited in a couple of days instead of several weeks. Just so you are aware the federal government will not contact you by phone and request your personal information they will always contact you by mail for any changes of bebefits etc. I did enjoy having fun with this jerk though so be careful and listen close when you get these type of calls.

| | Re: New Scam Alert!! Ron,
We had this happen several times when my Dad was still alive last year. He also refused to give information over the phone--which is what I told him to do--with anything. As you said, if the people call you, they should have all that information and more right there in front of them. Even if you don't want to confirm the ID number, i.e. S.S.#, or credit card number, ask them to read back any recent activity on your account--dr's visits, recent hospital stays, recent purchases on a credit card--and ask for several. That'll also get them. I also told my Dad if anybody calls, tell them you don't do business over the phone, and send a letter in the mail.
Glad you caught them. The best scenario is to keep them going as long as you can and turn the tables on them, and get more info. from them to give to the authorities. Caller ID is a big help sometimes because it allows the agency to narrow down the area where the the perps are at.
Good Job Ron! (as always!)
