| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? Nancy,
Congratulations! Hope all goes well to closing!
Both Ash and Walnut, as well as several other trees have leaves similar to those. If you could post a close-up of the leaves and tell us a bit more maybe we could pin it down. Just saw the last photo and I'd say Walnut. There should be some hard hulls around if it is walnut. If it's locust it'll have long bean pods on it as well as thorns, as Rick said. I grew up in Baker, Oregon, across the Snake River, and both of these trees grow there.

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? WELCOME TO IDAHO, NANCY!!
I'd welcome you in person, but I seem to remember that you were looking at property on the Western side of the state. I'm in Eastern Idaho...winters here on this side can be brutal...
Good luck and HAVE FUN in your new habitiat!!!

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? My bet is on walnut. I am sitting here looking out the window at several walnut trees and the leaves as well as their growth pattern looks identical. Also, don't know what locust you have out there, but the trunk in the photo resembles our black walnut. We have several types of locust (thorny and otherwise) and they all have a single trunk until they are at least 15 feet tall.
Locust are wonderful bee trees, flower prolifically, smell great when in bloom; but, other than that are a real problem. The thorns that are on the black locust are unbelievable and will even pierce tractor tires. The trees grow fast, but break a lot in the wind and the wood is not used much for anything. |

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? Locust makes great fence posts! It also puts nitrogen into the soil, being a legume. But I'd say walnut too. They're both hard hard woods!

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? Okay, one of you guys said there should be hulls on the ground if it's Walnut, so I checked out the photo real well and yup. There are obviously walnuts on the ground! Round things anyway
Lori: its only a few hundred miles between us. You don't really think I'd move that close and not come meet you and take some classes? Thanks for the welcome

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? Nancy, with the speed limits on the interstates here at 75 mph, a few hundred miles really isn't that far, is it? It's about a 4 1/2 hours from here to Boise (The way I drive - 3 3/4 to 4 hours...VROOOM... )
You're gonna like it here!!

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? Congratulations on finding your new home. It looks like a nice place and those mature trees add to the site so well. Idaho.....a great state, great 'taters, and great carvers. I'm sure it's a win, win situation for both you and the community. Enjoy getting settled in to your new hope and don't forget to plan your new carving shop well, while you have the opportunity. Maybe treat yourself to some new tools , as a house warming gift to yourself.

| | Re: New place in Idaho & tree ID? I'd have to vote on Black Walnut trees also. We've got 8 or 10 in our yard. Weather has been so dry this year they have started dropping walnuts already. If you decide to pick them up be sure an wear gloves. If you don't, you'll have black stains on your hands for several days until the stain wears off. I promise, you can't wash off the stain. If you do decide to pick them up, there is a tool made to pick them up so you don't have to bend over or crawl around on the ground to get them.
