Default What to make?

As I drive the tractor around the woods, in one area I have a 4 acre stand of black locust and black cherry trees. Around 6 or 8 of the cherry trees have large burls on them, they range in size from 12 to 24 inches across and up to 9 inches thick.

I wonder what I can make with them, (I know, I could send them to some of you but that's not my plan). Can these be carved or are they only good for making bowls on a lathe? I've never tried bowl making and I don't think I should try my first one on a burl.

Cherry burls you are really lucky they are beautiful and a dream to carve a little green. You can also make bowls out of them but wait until they dry. I love to carve cherry or pin cherry as I know it. The smell of the wood is great smells like almonds. As far as black locust I like to carve that as well and if you have a large enough tree the bark is second to only cottonwood and carves beautiful as well.
