Decided to put the to-do list away today and go sticking, was in despret need of more walking stick and cane wood. Took the wife and dog, neither good at the hunt but great at hauling...lol! Boy hope she don't see this. We belong to a local fishing club with well over a hundred acres of wood lands and makes for a good sticking site, though most of the trees in our area are maples of various kinds. Anyway long story short...too late...we had just pulled in to our area and found a debrie pile of someones cuttings, been awhile too it was nice and dry, started digging in and found a hugh amount of northen white cedar, about 20 or so trees. HOLY COW! These are not normally found in our area, they're very sparous in Ohio. Well anyway i have alot of work ahead of me and alot of fun. Michael Gray

Michael, I live just south of you in Delaware County. Everywhere you look there are huge piles of trees that have been cut and yanked out to make room for upscale housing. Now maybe I need to check these piles out..Thanks for the tip....Tom H

The sad thing is, some of these piles just lay there, rotting away. Good thing you rescued some wood from that sad fate, Graywolf.

Housing developments are the best place to find good wood Tom, because all they do is burn it or take it to the dump....what a waste. When i worked for 84 lumber i was always privy to some of the best locations. And, if you get in good with the contracor, tell him to call you when he up roots new locations. They will be more than happy to, cause the less they have to haul the less they have to pay for the hauling. Oh yea Tom, if you travel up my way, stop in at Apple Valley off route 36 east of town. They are ALWAYS doing construction and that place is loaded with good wood. But get a map of the area first, the place can be confusing if you've never been there. Yes, i will post some of the pics when i'm done, I need ya'lls opinion. Michael Gray

So do you turn these sticks to make your cane or just carve them? Sorry i'm not familiar with cane carving technique.

First off...Spookhouse, sorry i haven't replyed sooner, i've been in California and just got back. Second...no i don't turn 'em. I strip the bark and carve 'em down to what i want the walkingstick or cane to look like, that is if the size is right. I don't carve down a 6 inch diameter stick just for a walkingstick, those i cut down for other carvings. But for everthing i do i do by hand....for now, power may be in my future but not yet...too much for me.
