| | Haven't been on lately, need my fix! Hey folks, things just seem to go from bad to worse some days. Woke up Wednesday morning and booted up the computer, only to have the fan on the power supply fail. Great, well it wouldn't hurt to just quickly check my e-mail and I'll shut down and it will be fine, just have a new one installed.
Bad idea!
Thursday the tech calls and tells me that the motherboard and power supply were slightly fried. I head over and sure enough, burnt wires, transistors and melted circuts. The good news is they had some on sale, not top end but new and a lot more powerful than my old one. They also popped my old hard drive out of the old one and into the new one so I wouldn't lose anything. Well, that was a good idea, ....... but ........ the new one has Windows Vista, and most of the programs from the other machine wouldn't work. I am "not" computer literate........... ........... so I have had a "wonderful" weekend trying to get things working! Vista is a pain in the butt........... why can't they leave well enough alone. Hasn't Bill Gates enough $$$ Gazillions $$$ already? Nothing seems to make sense anymore, they've changed the names for all the simple commands and nothing is where it use to be or even resembles the former. It comes with a five or six page booklet that tells you nothing!!!
Thank goodness for carving, it calms me down after hammering on a keyboard trying to make things work and not succeeding!
I'm still around, just not up to much more than fighting with a computer and constantly losing! I'm just glad my sledgehammer is in the basement and I'm too sore to go bring it up to give this thing the beating it deserves!

| | Re: Haven't been on lately, need my fix! I know what you mean Bob I just went through the same thing with my computer but the only difference is I kept my windows XP. I spent the whole week loading. my voice recognition software and all my other programs back on. They don't make it easy for us that are not that computer savy. The only thing that saved me was the tech loaded one of my screen readers in so I could do the rest myself without them charging me more than they already did. Hope you get used to the Vista soon. I would have had to spend a small fortune if I had to go with Vista because like you my screen readers and voice recognition software would have to be re purchased and that's about two grand. Good luck.

| | Re: Haven't been on lately, need my fix! Sorry to read about the problems Bob. Carving tools are probably more reliable than computers I'm not familiar with the details of your computer failure but it sounds like maybe the motherboard failed and also caused the fan to fail? It may not have been the fan that went first....so don't blame yourself. In general the fan is used to cool the processor and if it fails the processor will shut down after reaching a high temperature. If you can find another used computer or a friend who has a non Vista computer, you can swap hard drives and then retrieve the data. I'm paranoid and back my stuff up often. Sure hope you didn't have anything important on the old HD. I have had computer failures in the past and do empathize with you.
Enjoy the carving and don't think about the computer while you're doing it |

Yep I agree on Gates and his gazillions and having to produce a system that isn't user friendly like Vista. I am lucky to have laptops and pc that don't run Vista. Put a laptop in for the church pastor and it had Vista and you are correct, A pain for sure.
Updates will help you out as not all drivers are in the Vista software when you get it. Anyway that is what I found out when putting the Church laptop In, some print drivers aren't compatable with Vista.
Best wishs and gald you are back. |

| | Re: Haven't been on lately, need my fix! Sorry to hear about your woes Bob but I have been there and done it too many times. I think as we get older the harder it is for us to absorb all this new stuff. But that is progress we may not like it but millions of others do and that is what makes Bill more millions. Glad your at least up and running again and it nice to see you back.

| | Re: Haven't been on lately, need my fix! The computer problems just seem to plaigue me. The "new" computer was a dud! The CD/DVD/optical drive wouldn't work and lots of conflicts within the system ........ that's what I get for not buying a brand name. So back I go this week, and return the beast and am now the proud owner of a nice mid level HP system, complete with a new 22" wide screen monitor.
I still have to learn how to use Vista and have my problems with it, but at least the thing works, so that's progress.
If I ever get this settled down, I can get some serious carving done, as this is destracting.
