Hand Held Vacuums

[Mischief]

Moved into my bedroom for carving, so that the unborn emperor of my belly will have a room without my woodchips. ( He will however have share his room with the big vacuum.HA!!)

So i am in my bedroom and thought I should get a good handheld to clean up after carve rather then go wake his emperorship by lug out the big vacuum. Any recommendations?

I was thinking of the Dirt Devil 08200 Scorpion Corded Handheld Vacuum . Reading the customer rating but not exactly getting the "great for sucking up woodchips" recommendation.

I have to move indoors for part of the winter, too cold in the shop. I bought this Stinger;
Stinger 2.5-Gallon 1-3/4 hp Wet/Dry Vacuum - WD2025 at The Home Depot

rather than carry the big shop vac in the house. I am real pleased with it. Really strong and priced very reasonable. I got mine at Home Depot like the URL. I don't know anyone else that sells them.

Bob, does that stinger make a lot of noise. It looks pretty compact and convenient for moving around. My present shop vac is very noisey...one of the older models.

I recently purchased a HOOVER WET /DRY HANDVAC. This little thing is rechargeable, and lasts for about 7 minutes per charge. Maybe not the best sucker in the world, but at $24, it works fine. This little bugger is not very loud either. The fact that it is battery operated, makes it more convient to use. I can even use it to pick up the chips that I manage to tract around, with no cord to mess with. It works fine...

The stinger is probably about as noisy as my household vac. Not too bad but you won't be talking on the phone while using it. Nowhere as noisy as my shop vac.

Haha! I bought the stinger and my downstairs neighbour didnt appreciate it. I guess I was a bit overzealous with it today. I woke at 7 and carved and vacuumed up the chips maybe at 8. and then I got into spring cleaning bagging clothes into space bags and just bag the last of it a few mins ago. Like 10 pm and low and behold I got a knock on my door about running my vacuum at all times of the day. Sigh! the problems of living in an apartment. I guess I am going to need to find me nice tub to carve in so I dont have to vacuum so often.

Yipes those must be some thin walls. How about buying a 10' x 10' tarp and laying that down under you? When done just pull up corners and dump into the garbage can?

This post makes me appreciate our place even more.. nearest house to us is over a mile away. And we are 3/4 of the way surrounded by lake. *grin* And we do our woodworking all night long.. saws, vaccuums, drills,sanders ect.

My wife has a small vac called The Shark,,works well for small jobs till she got a full size vac with a lift off portable canister for mobility. I own the Scorpion as well as the Dirt Buster by B&D. I tend to like the Dirt Buster a bit more. Just seems a bit more powerful,,easier to use the controls ( big deal ,,a button) but I do reach for it more often. Give the size of these units the filters clog pretty quickly but they're easy to clean so don't expect to vac an entire house let alone a whole room in one pass. The noise? Most vacs are noisy,,but these aren't bad. Use them mostly in a confined space like my car and it's not objectionable. Not like the whine from my shop vac. 'Course it's pretty old and might be screaming in pain for all I know,,but even there the newer ones are fairly quiet.

As a side note,,engineers built vacs that were very quiet and powerful. Women didn't like them as they thought the noisy ones did a better job even though they didn't. I used a friends central vac and I understood. Without noise it seemed like i was just pushing a stick around the room doing nothing. This doesn't mean much,,but funny how our perceptions work,,,
