| | Good news / bad news Good news first. I just got a new toy in from Rick Ferry's excellent store. So excited, I couldn't wait 'till I got home to open the package and start admiring it. Almost drove into the ditch! (no, that isn't the bad news)
Bad news is; wife has decided this weekend is spring-cleaning time. (sigh)
No playtime for whitecree this weekend... |

| | Re: Good news / bad news We are doing a carving show this weekend, and today was set-up.
There is an old tool dealer that has been there every year selling drawknives, planes a few watch-a-ma-callits, do-hickys, and thing-a-ma-jigs.
This year the majority of his selection is carving tools (covering an area twenty by three feet.) He always gives me first pick because I am his best customer (or biggest sucker for old tools).
Well, I really liked the tools he had on display. I offered him five dollars per tool for everything he had; I told him that would be a really good deal. (I didn't say it was a good for him)
His reply was "we are only about $1900.00 from making a deal."
So I only bought his really good tools; some Allongee gouges (Austrian), deep-bent V-parting tools (vintage Sheffield and early Henry Taylor) , and several Claude Bolton palm tools (Made by Harmon).
Don't ask what my total was, I'd rather not talk about that. I'll just say the cheapest was $4.00 (small Bolton V-tool) and the most expensive was $50.00 (a 3 in. #9 Allongee Gouge)
Most of the large mallet tools had a crack in the handle or had been replaced with a low quality handle. That makes little difference, I prefer to make my own handles to match the quality of the steel tool.
He has Ashley, Taylor, German, Swiss, Sheffield, Italian, Austrian, and many older tools with names of various European tool makers. I didn't pay much attention to the sets which were Marples, Stubai, Henry Taylor, and Robert Sorby.

Of course, there is the rest of Rick's store to browse through as well... |

| | Re: Good news / bad news White cree,
dont get tough with them 5/16" v tools, i had to buy 2...
when doing the end hairs on a beard where you push and pick out the wedges, dont get overly rambuncious or youll be ordering another, cus there so hard there brittle, heck they got to be to stay sharp,,
i had dropped the very first one that was given to me, and it crumpled in my hands as i started to use it the next time. apperently it cracked from the fall.
so ive had 3 and taking it easy on the last one i bought,
I did find a work around the need for a small v tool by taking a larger v tool and regrinding the profile back 10 degreese or so, it makes the bottom of the v stick out further and with some careful steering i get the same effect as using the smaller palm v tool.. it saves on shipping and handling. ha ha..
i do have to send rick my 1/4th" v took, ive sharpened the bottom v out of it, it looks like butter fly wings, with no head.
but that will happen some time in the future,
i thought about getting the second set of dockyard micro tools the one with the v but i dont need the others in that set, the 3rd set has micro knives but at $40.- a pop it dont take long to get enough dockyard sets.. |

| | Re: Good news / bad news Heck, my workbench(es) are nothing but rubble heaps, including the tablesaw. I'm slowly getting squeezed into a smaller and smaller space. Once I get down to about 18 square inches to sit in, I'll clean up.
And then surprise myself with all the stuff I find buried. Almost as good as Xmas!
Nice looking Santa pin. Looks about 2-3" long.
