Default Future Carvers

Just had to share pictures of my grandsons learning to handle a mallet and gouge. I have just started a Southern Belle bust and they were helping me with the first stages of roughing out. Does anyone else have pictures of children or grandchildren getting their first experiences in carving?

Wow,

They've got the right form already, better buy them their own set of tools for Christmas!!!! I spend a week each summer helping young men earn their wood carving merit badge at Boy Scout camp. I think it's really importatnt to get the young people out into the shop. This is time away from TV, video games, and instant messaging. It's also a great way to spend some time with them on a one to one basis. I can;'t get my son to carve, but he loves working on the lathe. He and I go to all of the turning shows together, and have a lot of fun. I think it's importatnt to have something to share with your kids or grand kids.

Carving,
Dan Heine

Yes, the nearly right form but at that age you have to watch them like a hawk! I think the oldest one will have to wait at least another year, maybe two. I think he needs to want them a little longer. I have always felt that if kids get everything they want before they are really ready, it actually slows their development. Just my opinion.

I agree, its the things we want bad enough to work for and wait for that mean something..the instant gratification stuff lasts about a day lol
