| | Funny Carving Stories I was just reading the "Stuff Happens" section of Lori Corbett's website...and laughing uncontrollably. I've got a few stories to share--does anyone else? We know Colins run-in with the forest dragon, but I'm sure we all have our share of stories...
I'll try to set some time aside later today to write up a couple of mine!

| | Re: Funny Carving Stories Ah but Colin was a trooper and slayed that pesky dragon, not befor the dragon did bodily harm to Colin. But being the mounty he is, he saved the day and all the fair Madians are safe from the dragon. BUT, we wonder if they are from Colin!

| | Re: Funny Carving Stories OK, here is mine.
I use a lot of superglue (for both carving and scrolling) and my wife introduced me to 'nail' glue. It's used to attach false nails and comes in larger containers than ordinary superglue and has a better lid--it doesn't seem to get stuck as bad...
So i was going into a beauty supply store (nail glue is a lot cheaper there) and since I don't have much of an ego, I wasn't too threatened <grin>. I went in, got a big bottle of nail glue, and then saw a large bottle of acetone on sale. Knowing myself as I do, I picked that up as well.
When I went up to check out, I could see the woman behind the counter struggling with something...finally she just sputtered: "We also have a sale on acrylic nails and nailpolish."

| | Re: Funny Carving Stories About 17 years ago, a friend of mine and I took a stone carving weekend workshop. It was scheduled for Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday. The instructor was very well known for her use of hand tools and finishing techniques, and we were both anxious to see her whole process.
She was very tight with the schedule, and we worked from one tool instruction to another, not worrying about the design on the stone much, because she would stay "Stop, put that tool down, and move on to the next stage" in order for each of us to stay at the same step in the sculpture.
This was a rare treat for me that weekend, because my children were young, and I was a single mother with very little time to spend on myself.
The first two days were a concentrated lesson of tools, and techniques, with each of us carving on an alabaster stone.
On Sunday morning, the instructor said to "stop and look at the other students work...take a break, before we move to the next step...."
I walked around a bit looking at other folks works. Most were abstract shapes in pleasing vertical forms. Very flowy, and elongated. I had not gone in that direction, and felt a little short and squatty with my piece of stone, but had learned so much already that I didn't mind.
Then, I noticed my friend and a few others in the class all gathering around my stone. They were pointing and putting thier hands over their mouths to hide big smiles.
I walked back over, honestly not knowing what they were on about, and she looked at the others, and said "ready,...one, and a two, and a three.. and they all broke out singing the Ninja Turtle theme from the cartoon. I had accidentally carved a perfect Ninja turtle head complete with mask.
I spent the next hour changing it, and use it for a door stop to this day.
