Default Fried Squirrel Anyone?

Love must have been in the air. We can't keep the baby squirrels from the bird feeder. There are six but one took off before I could take the picture. The wife thinks they are cute. Yeah, we'll see how cute they are eating the tomatoes and corn from the garden. Good thing I have a killer hunting dog, Princess Priscilla Little Paws.

They're only cute when they are not being destructive....and since we live in the remains of an ancient pecan grove, we have a lot of the little buggers. My other hobby is growing Japanese bonsai, I have tinkered at that for about 40 years and I don't take kindly to squirrels digging into the pots my bonsai are planted it. I started shooting them with a pellet gun about 30 years ago after trying everything I could think of to keep them away....nothing worked.

I hate to think how many I have buried over the years. The neighbor cat used to get so excited when he saw me come out of the house with the pellet rifle because he knew from experience that one of those little buggers was going to bite the dust....the cat would literally sit beside me like a darn gun dog and wait. Soon as the squirrel hit the ground, the cat grabbed it and took it home. I know she was presenting the dead squirrels to her owners as "gifts", saying "look what I did".....LOL.

I don't like to kill things so I stop shooting when the damage to my trees stops. The last 10 years or so, I've not killed many....thin out the population a bit when they start digging in my trees again...about every 3 or 4 years.

Unfortunately, it's that time again. Every morning when I go out to check my trees, there has been digging around their roots. These trees are up on shelves too! It's not like they're sitting on the ground, tempting the little buggers. sigh. One does what one must do....

Yummy Yummy! When I was growing up my Dad loved to go up river hunting. He would come home with Squirrels . Mother would cook them in the pressure cooker until real brown and tender and make the most wonderful gravy. Then put crust in a deep dish pan with top and bottom crust . Now that was the best pie I have ever eaten. Try that with mashed potatoes. Charlotte
