Default Fires in south Georgia and our own Santagibbs

Hi all,
I just got a reply from Charlotte (santagibbs) regarding the fires in south Georgia.

Her home is only 9 miles from the fire right now. It has burned a record amount of land in the history of Georgia and is not contained even now. On top of that, they suspect that there are more fires being set on purpose.

I told her I would post to the list for her, as she has had trouble doing so and update all of her friends here of the situation. I'm sure she and everyone else affected or threatened would appreciate your thoughts.
Thor

Part of her e-mail is as follows:

We have all been anxious with the " Monster " fire so near by but we have had fire fightes from all over the United States.. They say it is the worst fire in the history of Georgia.. I am about nine miles form it but so far they have been able to keep it from getting into the town.. We are on the edge of the Swamp and Highway 1 seperates us from the fire. The fire has spread all the way to Folkston, Ga and now they think that there is someone that is setting more fires..Can you believe that anyone would be so insane to do such a thing..WE are so grateful for those precious fireman that are working so hard to keep us safe. The smoke has been heavy yesterday and today, but because of North Westerly winds it has kept the smoke away most of the time.. Now it's South Easterly and that brings it here.. This weekend it's to be from the North so that will bring us some relief from the smoke.. I wanted to post a message and ask for prayer for this fire but I don't know if it is me, or something has changed on the board, but the posts seem to be much larger and I just can't find " post a new thread." I am like duhhhhh where is it? Charlotte Thank You

What a great thread.....

I also want to ask for prayer - believe it or not my son is a fireman here in Tifton Georgia and has been going to Waycross to fight the fire. He is 20 years old and I am very proud of him, but as a father I am concerned. The fire is huge with flames upwards of 100 feet at times.

My son comes home very tired and dehidrated, it has been about 92 degrees here in Tifton without the fire.

Santagibbs, I will pray for you and I did not know you were so close. Perhaps some day we can meet. Until then I pray God keeps you safe.

Greg (in Tifton, Georgia)

Thank's Thor for posting this message for me .. You are a little Jewel...I going to find out sooner or later how to post a new thread and I appreciate you doing this for me...Yes, I have the higest respect for those that fight fires.. My heart goes out to those brave men..The flames have been shooting 100 feet in the air...and the heat the last few days has been in the ninties. It is to cool down some next week and there is a front coming through but they don't think it will be much rain and we need bucket fulls to put this monster out..The pictures that I have received from those that have posted them are ( get this Lynn) AWSOME...There are no other words for it.Yesterday there was this huge mushroom of a cloud that was settled over the area that looked so eerie.. I think now there is 87,000 acres that has been destroyed and the pollution that is going into the atmosphere is really bad..I think of all the little creatures that are displaced and lost form it.. The lady that works for me came today and said that they found two ten foot alligators in their friends pond near " Race Pond" and had to call the game and fish to come get them..I keep looking sideways into my pond to see if the ducks are still there and the little coot.. so far so good... After all those gators get hungry too... Thanks so much for all your prayers and tell your sons that we dearly love them for helping us..
Waycross has been spared and it's because of all the efforts of those wonderful fireman... Thanks again , Charlotte

Your comments mean an awefull lot to me. Starting the day with a tear in my eye. My son has always been a servant of others, wanting to help. He will be on duty here in Tifton Fri. and Sat. and back at Waycross for 24 hours on Sunday.

Charlotte, I am praying for a whole bunch of rain out of those few clouds, just all in the right place :>)

Be careful, that fire is nothing too mess with.

Greg

Old habits die hard.

Even though I have been retired for almost 12 years, I still keep up with many of the same things that I did during my "park Ranger" days. I have been keeping up with the current fire situation but was unaware that any of our members were threatened.

My frien's, it is bad for this early in the fire season. This morning's report on the situation near Santagibbs shows four uncontained fires and over a thousand personnel committed. No containment dates are listed for a couple, one is for May 9th and another for June 1. Only one is estimated at over 50% contained.

There are 12 uncontained large fires throughout the country with 10 of them in the south. This is a very unusual picture. It is shaping up to be a rough fire season.
