Feedin' the little birds

The birds keep us from going "birdy" in the winter, hard not to enjoy watching them.

Hi Nancy,
I'm having an easy time getting the little ones to come in if all conditions are right. We have a bunch of "hummers" in the summer and they hover & dive all around while I'm out in the gardens and I can sit in a chair within a couple feet of their feeder but have never had one land on my finger.

Awwww, aren't you just the big old softy? I am a an avid bird fan and I hope to have a feeder out when I move to the bush. Sure looks cold in those photos...brrrr. Thanks for the nice pics Papa Dan.

Dan -- if you just walk out and stand under a hummer feeder they all scatter for 30-60 seconds. Put your fingertips on as many feeding station perches as you can (I was using those giant feeders that fed 8 or 10) Within a minute they will perch on your fingers.
One day I cut out 'blobs' of colored construction paper, pinned and taped them all over myself and headed outside. Within minutes I had those birds all over me - lol.
I did get to stand within a couple feet of a male and female pileated trying to teach a chick how to use a wire suet feeder.
But I've never been touched a chickadee or titmouse.

Rufous humming birds are average size but probably one of the fastest and most maneuverable fliers. Extremely territorial, the males fight their screaming, chirping and buzz-bomb battles almost nonstop every day. They do actually hit each other, a sight to behold. The females have a display that keeps the males from driving them off the feeders, too.

I've watched them mate in my front yard, I think that they nest in the densest parts of my big front yard spruce trees.
We also get the little Calliope. Last summer for the very first time, a big Black-chinned male spent two weeks at my place and one house/feeder across the street. The Rufous males left him alone.

Hey Joe, We've actually had a mild winter here, still cold but not bad. Glad you liked the pics.

Nancy, Now you've got me envious, pileated woodpeckers are fairly rare in my neck of the woods but we have had at least one pair nesting here for as long as I can remember. See them often but never get very close, love the way they fly. Thanks for the info about the hummers.

Brian, We only have the ruby throated hummers here but we do get a lot of enjoyment out of them, little critters are pretty territorial themselves!

thanks for sharing, I too love to feed the birds, and yes it certainly does make ones day, I'm trying to get my granddaughter to sit still long enough for the chickadees to land - she's not yet 3 but she is getting close
