Default Driving across the USA

Been away from the Board for a few weeks, except for those few times I could "steal" grand daughters puter for a few seconds. For those of you who haven't driven across the country lately - you are really mssing something. This is a great country, but "things are a changin". I have been making the drive, at least once a year, for the past 37 years; and some of the changes are not for the best.. One day I might list some of these changes I note and see if anyone else shares my concerns....But I did find some very thick Cottonwood bark in Colorado...Drove home with ants and spiders all over the inside of the van. I love to watch trains. The American South West has the best looking trains in the country. But have noticed a change during the past several years.

...All I have to do is step out my back door at work and I see those all day long (on their way to and from NJ/NYC)...

...used to live in Idaho and was amazed how fast things were changing out west...its just not the same, who'd thunk I would be wishing for the good ole days?

Change is good, except when it isn't.

I love cross country driving. Wish I could do it more than once every 5 years or so.

I love to drive the Southwest desert in the spring. But this year spring is either late or missing all together. Wild flowers are replaced with plastic bags and other pieces of trash. Remember the TV commercial with the Native American with a tear running down his cheek? Tom H

We travel most of the year and yes the trash is getting worse, if they were really fining for littering there wouldn't be any. We loved the traveling in the first 10 years, but now it isn't quite as interesting, have seen most of it before. Still got a few states to see.

Jim, Actually that photo was taken in Cal. It was taken outside of Barstow, on the way to the Marine base. The reason I remember exactly where, is that after I lowered the van window the switch broke, with the window in the down position. It was late Saturday and dealships all closed. Drove across to LA with no window. Was smart enough to put an ear plug in the left ear...There were places across the country where there was even more of a mess along the road ways. The worst is the plastic bags and the black plastic sheeting. Maybe San Francisco has the right idea about banning the plastic bags....It sure would go a long way in keeping the roadways cleaner.
