Default drill bits

I am thinking of trying to carve wooden pens and also fishing lures. The only drill bits I find are short anyone know where longer ones can be purchased for say pens I'm not certain of the diameter but for lures I'm guessing 1/16th any pen carvers know of the diameter for pens. I would guess I would need 5 inches protruding outside of the drill Thanks in advance for any help.

check your local hardware and ask for "jobber length" bits....they just might have them stashed away somewhere.

Woodcraft, they aren't 1/8 but they have long bits.

COLT Extra Long 10" Brad Point Bits - Woodcraft.com

I usually use 7MM or 10MM for pens. You are normally only drilling half the length of the pen as most are made from 2 blocks.

I did make some that were one piece, from corian and I had to drill from each end. The smaller the bit, it seems they are shorter too.

Woodcraft used to sell Colt brand that was longer. I have a 1/8 in my box that is 6 inches long. Maybe Colt still makes them and you can get them elsewhere.

Robert, if you need to use mine just let me know.

Bob

Any machine supply place will have them

Granger
Mc Master Carr

There are many other companies

These are the big boys and are world wide. You can get long, extra long and in any quality you want. Every time I see them cheap at a swap meet I buy them. I have thousands of dril bits. Then again I have a small machine shop.

I turn pens on a wood lathe a ton and if your looking for long bits check your local hardware and just find the aircraft bits you can get them down to 1/16" and up to 16" long. If you want bits for just making pens I use Colt Five Star brad points colt also has long length bits, very nice bits haven't had any problem with them and they are dangerously sharp, try woodcraft for bits and for pen kits try woodturnerssupply aka craft supplies usa.
