...Lynn when you said, "...lets just go whittle..." did you mean 'hand whittle' or 'power whittle'

| | Re: Does "hand carved" imply hand tools? This is an interesting thread .Being a new carver I never really thought about it until I saw this thread.
that being said the first thing that I thought was hand carved means no power tools .
and then as I read more and more of this long horse beaten thread it becomes apparent that its not so black and white.
if you rough it out with a band saw or use any power tools in the process is it then not hand carved?
ofcorse its hand carved you use your hands to carve it BUT nothing good ever comes after but.
sO I did a little survey of my friends (most are not knowledgeable in carving) and the consensus is hand carved means no power tools .when asked why they think that they answered because they think its more difficult with hand tools than power tools.and if its more difficult then it must be worth more money.
and then I would tell them why I asked them in the first place and after talking to them about it, and mentioning some of the point brought up on this thread a fair bit of them changed their minds (about half).and the other half still would not budge from there first answer.
so in conclusion I think that most people would say using power tools would not qualify as hand carved.right or wrong that seems to be general opinion at least with this highly scientific survey of my friend and family.

| | Re: Does "hand carved" imply hand tools? well...if you hooked a Foredom up to an egg beater, then it wouldn't be a power tool anymore, right? |

You take it in your Hands and only using Hand tools you complete the Santa. You did not touch the Santa with a power tool. Did you hand carve the Santa? If I pick up one of my blanks and do the same thing is it Hand carved. Did the Lumber Jack fell the tree with an axe or a chainsaw? Was the block you have in your paws milled with a band saw or hand hewn?
You know it all boils down to creating a piece of art. I always say carve from your heart. Do what you feel is right. Get from Point start to point finish with whatever you enjoy. That carving, that little creation you finished was nothing more than a little seed that spent its life as a tree. It will spend eternity as your creation.
Theres a roughout from the wood of the tree that this blossom is on for the first person that names the tree.

| | Re: Does "hand carved" imply hand tools? I guess ya could hold the power tool with your mouth, then, it would be "Hand Carved" Or maybe your foot eh? How about trying to cave with just your hand and no tools, then maybe it would be considered "Hand Carved". But then, I doubt that anyone can "Hand Carve" wood with at a tool. That is what power tools are, Tools", just like the knife or gouge or Foredom, Eh? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
