Default Children of the fifties....

Well, have you heard the latest? It wasn't bad enough to find out other things from our youth that were bad for us...remember playing with the mercury that came out of a thermometer? They actually had us do that in science class! Then there was the dust from cleaning the erasers, everyone wanted to do that, you got to go outside, by yourself....of course, now we know when we slapped those erasers together we surrounded ourselves with a cloud of dust that didn't do our little bodies one bit of good! But this latest is just too much!! They are now tarnishing my Christmas memories!!

Did you have icicles on your Christmas tree in the fifties? Who didn't?!! I remember my Dad patiently teaching me how to hold them draped over my hand to put them on, carefully, only a couple at a time, no throwning at the tree in our house!....and then....carefully draping them over my hand again when we removed them, placing them over the cardboard insert they came on and putting them lovingly away till next year....and the next year....and the next year. Heck, my parents quit using them when they got an artificial tree (long after I was grown up and married) but I bet they're still packed away somewhere in their basement.

Anyhow, the reason they held up so well, stayed perfect looking and didn't crinkle up (like the ones I bought when I got married) was because they were full of lead!

So......we now know we have been exposed to all kinds of danger when we were young and innocent, that's why some of us....like me...have memory and concentration problems. Am I the only one who runs into a room to get something, then stands there and can't remember what they came there for?? Or who sits in Church, fully intending on listening to every word of the Sermon and then drifts off to....ususally in my case....thoughts of carving? Or the harder I try to remember a persons name, can't! (I tried the 'associate something about the person with a key word, that will trigger remembering their name'....yeah, right...I remember the key word, can't remember the name!)

Well, hearing this latest, I have come up with my best excuse yet for all those things happening. Last night, when I found myself asking hubby a question (which as soon as it was out of my mouth, I realized I had already asked and he had already answered.....he pounced on that one....his memory is so bad he loves when I mess up!) Anyhow, the end of this long rant is the excuse I gave him last night......"I'm sorry, I can't help it, I have ADD.....AND (this is the best part!) I'm not responsible.....I'm simply the product of the products of my youth! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it....as long as I can remember it, that is!

Have a Merry (lead free) Christmas, everyone! Deborah

It's bad enough that cats and dogs would get all messed up by eating those icicles...but they can get lead poisioning as well...

What were we talking about again? My doctor says I do have ADD, but he doesn't want to put me on anything because he's afraid I'll lose my edge!

if only I could explain that to Shannon <grin>

Oh, yeah, icicles--when your pets eat them (cats love to play with them)the wrap around their intestines and can actually cut through them!

Holiday safety FYI

Bob

I know now that I am not the only one here loosing it Deborah. I thought I was not the only one who would go to get something and then couldn't remember what it was or why I needed it. The thing that always gets me is when I take a measurment of something and go to lay it out and can't remember. I end up standing there staring at it like a monkey doing a math problem. Oh Yeh Isicles!! Ron

Amazing how everyone seems to have bad memories anymore, didn't hear of that when we were kids, oh the occasional older, I mean OLD person would be senile but even then, not many of those, I say and have said for years, 90% of the ails of our society are in our food, big companies will put anything in there to make a profit and extend the ingredients! Chemicals in beef, chickens etc, pollution, in the water and the air! If you want to be enlightened, do a computer study of dog food, yes dog food! It is unconscienable what they put in dog food,!! I have no doubt that same and worst is in our food! And they want to take God out of the equation? guess that is so they don't feel guilty...............in my humble opinion of course!

Are you talking about that thin tinsel stuff? Oh man.. if so, I'm doomed. We as kids used to tie a knot on the end of one.. stick it between our front teeth and blow really hard. We were lizzards chasing each other. LOL Boy.. lotta dust on that memory.. uffda.

Yep I remember tinsel, we also had a real tree, always seeme like they were top heavy, we always had a heck of a time standing them up. I remember we didn't have running water either had to haul water in, and had to go to the outhouse, We did that till I was about 10. To me those were the good old days, black and white TV was a luxury for us.

ADD is my middle name, I too have stood in the garage wondering what the heck did I come in for. Now I find myself writing stuff down so I can remember and forgetting where I put the list
Merry Christmas Folks
and New Year

As far as ADD, I'm also a card carrying member, hmm what was I going to write............ oh ya
