Well, I won't post the original "Archie" pasty recipe, although my dad did have it put in the local paper back in the late 40's and I believe in one of the outdoor life type mags. I will, if anyone wants it, email it (if my wife will agree)????hehehehe to anyone who wants it.

The newspaper-wrap idea came long after the "tin pasty pail", when the common commercial lunch pail came into vogue. Probably had something to do with management wanting to stop the whiskey part of the lunch. I'll see if Ican find a photo of an original "pasty pail" around here somewhere.

After Logging Camps, with their camp cook and chow hall became a thing of the past in the UP, and loggers began commuting from home to the job site, those gypo crews took up carting pasties with them, too.

Pierre, Ah, the ski jump, been there too. If posting the recipe puts you in the dog house, don't do it!

I sure hope there are a few members enjoying these ramblings as much as I am. Come to think of it there are some great subjects being put forth for caricature carvings....cowboys, loggers, farmers, "Cousin Jacks and Jennies", miners , and ski jumpers. Good thing thies posts are on the "Off Topic" forum though.

Al, funny that you would mention the pronounciation of pasties. Everybody here at work, no matter how many times i correct them, continually call them pay-stees. The ones that we make here contain potatoes, ground beef, rutabaga, carrots and onions. Most people seem to enjoy them.

Bob, do you remember that the Iron Mountain ski jump was once billed as "the longest, highest artificial ski jump in the world"?
Remember the year that the winter olympic jump trials was held there?
And do you remember our one, solitary musical "claim to fame"?

Pierre, unless I miss my bet, Pine Mountain is STILL the highest artificial ski slide in the world. There are a couple "natural" slides that are bigger, natural being those slides with no scaffolding.

I believe Pine Mountain is still listed as a 90 meter hill, but may have benn extended to a 100 meter. Anything above that is classed as a SKI FLYING hill, as opposed to the 90 meter sik JUMPING hills. That's what we have here in Gogebic County at Copper Peak. Only due to some severe poor planning, Copper Pak faces the SE so is troubled by notorious crosswinds and a strong winter sun that seems bound and determined to melt any snow that manages to get attached to the steep slope. Needless to say this one hasn't been a huge success.

Would that musical claim to fame be the Miles Cavianni band? Popular big band in the 40's.

Speaking of Pine Mountain....my dad was the "official" photographer for all the tournaments up till he died in 1954, as the tournaments were all sponsored by the Elks Club and Dad was a long standing member.. Any photos you see in the Ski Hall of Fame were probably taken by him, or by Dick Ferris, also of Iron Mountain. Dick was the photog for the Iron Mountain News.

If I can find it I'm sure that somewhere in this house there's a picture of a sign that has all the bragging rights of the ski jump. I remember standing at the end of the jump and looking down at the landing area, not for me! If I had wings I may have tried it.

I do remember that the jump trials were held there.

But have no idea of the musical claim to fame.

And do you remember the kid that swallowed his own tongue going down the ski jump? Everyone in town was shocked by that one, and its the only time I've evee heard of that happening.
