Some times I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. So I go down in the basement and carve or straighten things up.until I get sleepy .

I wish, but with 2 little ones constantly waking me up, I think it'd be too dangerous to try and carve!

I might not carve but I sit and stare at it to get ideas through tired eyes.. Charlotte

I'm with Jillsy and Charlotte... No kids but I do live with a very nice old lady that turns into a very mad old woman when she's kept up at night.... so I just lay there and think about all the things that I'm going to do. If visualization is the secret to perfecting an art then I've carved a lot more with my mind than I'll ever carve with my hands.

Yup I do everything you all said, often. But for me there is no going back to bed, once I'm up, I'm up till bedtime that night.I don't find it a very productive time though, like Charlotte I sit a stare at it a lot. My best carving time is after I have slept well then get out to the shop at 5-6 am. My mind is sharper, I notice things that need to be done quicker and I'm ready to get to it.

I'm with you, Stickman. My sleeping is at times on a very odd schedule. As a result, I often wake up at 3 or 4 in the ayem. Instead of cursing about insomnia, I scamper downstairs and for the next couple of hours, have a very productive time.

Out of consideration for those who do not have weird sleep times, I keep the carving strictly to hand tools, no power at all. But also like Nancy said, once I'm up, that's it, I'm up.

I blame my odd hour sleeping times on the many years of night shift hours spent on duty in the service, over 17 years of graveyard kinda keeps you in a different world,
i still dont sleep at any given hour, so i go till i cant keep my eyes open any longer, then head out for the bed , hoping something like a new WCI dont catch my attention before i can dive in the rack,
but usualy 3 hours and im up again, only if i feel drugged still will i return to try to sleep or watch 2 hours of some stupid television... then get up make coffee and start back to reading the fourm or carve some without power in respect for my wife who still works,, for 2 more years...

sure makes it hard for relationships, and raising grandchildren

Yup, Never had normal hours, well, steady 8 to 5 job. Most of mine were 12 hour shifts and odd hours like 4 am to 12 noon.
Know what you mean by carving at night or morning time.
You would think after retiring 3 + years ago, I could get back in to the routine. Nah! Hasn't happen yet. But then One of these days I will sleep 24/7 just like I worked.
