Default carving is the best hobby ever!!!

i mean it!!! from slobbering all over new tools, learning a new technique to improve your carvings, meeting new people, making people smile when they see your carvings, then freaking them out by just handing them the thing they are admiring and letting them take it home, the way a sharp tool makes that noise when it cuts...c'mon, you know the noise..., carving 2 semi-matching eyes on the 3rd try, meeting and talking to professional carvers(mike shipley...i've been to his house and shop!!!, dave and michelle stetson, joe schumacher(sp), kirt curtis(sp), john burke...an awesome character!!!, vic hood, rex branson, al streetman... hoping to one day meet fred cogelow, marv kaisersatt, mark akers)...,chicks dig the scars on my hands(LOL), THE PICTURES MY KIDS DRAW, THEN LEAVE ON MY WORKBENCH WITH AN NOTE, "PLEASE CARVE THIS!!!", taking a piece of wood and making it into something cool, my cottonwood bark addiction, the way I scan the low water crossings after a hard rain for driftwood and rootwads, the way I victoriously raise old wooden drivers over my head and do a little dance at yard sales when I find them so I can carve a "club duck" ( "you got 32 wood drivers now, and have yet to carve a damn club duck!!!"...my wifes words, not mine...), getting on this forum and being allowed to post a big ramble like this, man I love this hobby!!!

There, I feel better now, thank you...

More thumbs up from here, especially the part of be able to hand over a carving to a friend or family member, the best feeling of all.

What a great post! Thanks for sharing your passion!

I love the silence and just the sound of carving wood and losing track of time.

Not to mention the smell of smoke coming off of the wood burner. That stuff is downright intoxicating. Can I get an AMEN???

A few more reasons why carving is the best hobby:
1. I can carve year-round;
2. I can carve in any weather;
3. I can carve alone or with other carvers;
4. I don't need a foursome, a fourth, or a partner;
5. I can carve for an hour, a few hours or all day;
6. I don't need to reserve a court;
7. I don't need to pay dues;
8. I don't need to join a league;
9. Carving tools never go out of style;
10. I can compete or not compete; it's my call;
11. I can log on to this message board and be surrounded by really talented and really nice carvers!

Do you have some advantages to add to the list? Mike
