| | Batteries Recharged....Ready to Carve!! Just back from our trip to OKC and the Prix de West show at the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Fantastic. For those of you interested in the old west there is no better place to go to be totally overcome by that theme. The Buffalo Bill complex in Cody comes close but OKC is the place to go for the complete picture of all things associated with the Cowboy and items related to him.
The Prix de West is the top show in the U.S. for western art. This year they had an entire room devoted to sculpture. Orland C. Joe, a Ute-Navajo artist who works in stone took the top prize this year. Check out his site at www.orelandjoe.com
Anyway, just thought I would pass along this info in case you happen to pass through central Oklahoma. The show runs through September.

| | Re: Batteries Recharged....Ready to Carve!! Lynn, I have just been visiting the Orland Joe website. What an incredible carver! Wonder how he adds the color to the stone and bronze pieces?
You are fortunate to live near the Hall of Fame (at least near enough for occasional visits). This was a regular stop for Diana and I as we traveled.
You mentioned the Buffalo Bill Museum (Cody, WY). This, too, is a must for those of us interested in western art. Two others, that I have visited, are Western Artist's Museum (Kerrville, TX) and, again near you, WooLaRock Museum (Bartlesville, OK).
There are two more on my list of "must visit"; but, the names escape me. One in Tulsa (OK) and the other in Phoenix (AZ). |

| | Re: Batteries Recharged....Ready to Carve!! You guys are lucky to have access to those places. Here in the East, we have to rely on photos, books and on line information. The Old West is a favorite of mine from the time I was a kid, and Fredercik Remington was one of my favorite artists, as well as Charles Russell. Is there a Remington museum?

| | Re: Batteries Recharged....Ready to Carve!! The Remington Museum is in Ogdensburg, NY but I've never been fortunate to go. A few years ago, while at the Cody Museum, I bought two books which contain his entire output as an artist, even entries about the ones he destroyed. "Jedediah Smith Crossing the Mojave" is one of my favorites but, unfortunately, he burnt it. However, an engraving was made before he struck the match.
They're putting together a set of books that will have all of Charlie Russell's works. Can't wait as he is my idol!! |

| | Re: Batteries Recharged....Ready to Carve!! Lynn, we have a wonderful foundry here in Prescott Valley, AZ. that does the bronze work for Orland Joe. I was fortunate to be at one of their open houses when he was there and got to meet him and watch one of his sculptures being refined after bronzing.
He is really nice and very humble. His bronzes are some of the best and I can see why he won.
