Default Bamboo Native American Style Flute

So I took a class with Mike Bloomquist at NEWR this year on making a NA style flute out of bamboo. Really enjoyed the class. So much so that I've become immersed now in making flutes instead of carving. Anyway - I did a write up about it on my blog (link in my sig) and I've just uploaded a followup post with a video of me improvising with it. If you have a moment - check it out and let me know what you think of the sound.

Here's a link to it on YouTube as well.

Cheers!

Hey Chuck, that sounded great! I have a friend who makes NA style flutes, I love the sound of them. I'd love to find someone to teach me how to make them.

Thanks Raven -

There's a TON of online information in several discussion forums devoted to them. The Flute Portal (google it) has some great info - and there are a couple Yahoo Groups (basic_naf_making and nativeflutewoodworking) that are excellent also.

Give it a shot. I found the bamboo flute VERY easy to make.

Cool flute, Chuck! Your video was great. I love the sound of traditional flutes such as the Native American flute. The sound is so haunting. I have a good source for bamboo and I might just make one... or two... or...

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. Ed - be very careful. Just like carving Flute making is addictive and a slippery slope to tread. But I am loving it so far.

Ron - I should fess up that I am a guitar player for 30+ years and have been dabbling with wind instruments (penny whistle and NA flute for 6 or 7). So I wasn't a total beginner from the playing perspective. Sorry if I gave that impression with my initial post.

That said though - do NOT let that put anyone off from trying it. The NA Flute is probably one of the easiest instruments in the world to make sound musical. You really can't hit a "bad" note. You can get more expressive with experience as your technique grows, but the technique is not hard and you don't need to learn to read music or anything. Very intuitive to play. I think that's partly why they're growing in popularity - they resonate with our spirit and in the core of our being. Very soothing and meditative to play.

Hey There Chuck,

You have really sparked my interest with the flute. I actually listen to native flute music while carving. I am working on a walking stick right now with a native american carved on it. I like to think the music will help my carving by helping me to visualize what it is I want my carving to look like. May just be in my mind but it can't hurt.

You done a fine job with your flute and your YouTube video. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Clinton
