Default Any tree experts here????

A friend has this tree in his yard, just wanted to see if anyone could identify it. This is one ugly tree. No prizes!! just an attaboy or attagirl. Skip

Based on the leaves, I'd say sweet gum. But the tree and bark has me perplexed. Was this tree in a fire by any chance?

dose it have golf ball size stickery balls hanging or around the base on ground,
then its definately sweet gum the wood is a little harder than tulip popular

Since you are in PA I would also guess Oriental Sweetgum ( L. orientalis ) since China Sweetgum ( L. formosana ) and American Sweetgum ( L. styraciflua ) are not hardy in Zone 5, which encompasses most of PA.

Looks like some kind of Maple. Except for it's size, I'd have guessed Japanese Maple by the picture of the leaves. Now I'll have to drop back and punt.
