I asked earlier in the Painting and Finishing section about how best to go about stripping a name plate from a boat my brother-in-law used to own. He sold it shortly after he married my wife's sister, and since then it has passed through 4 owners, and with each it deteriorated further until now the old "BOOMERANG" sits out in the woods down by the harbor, her hull rotting and all ther equipment scavanged. Last week I went down and with the current owners permission, pulled off the name plate, with intentions of restoring it as best I could to the original condition. Here's a few photos....first of the stern area of the "BOOMER" in her heyday, then of the rotting stern with the name plate attached and finally the finished restoration. I got it pretty much like in the first picture. I have better shots of the Boomer but they are all on slides....gotta get a slide scanner one of these days. Oh, I added a couple more of the "derilect". This is a darn shame, as the old Boomer was a proud and well kept craft. I'll probably give the restored board to Bud at Christmas. Hi Al, you did a remarkable job of restoring the name plate. I'm sure your brother-in-law will be ecstatic to receive it and will appreciate the time and effort you spent on it. It is sad to see the decline and deterioration of the boat from the first photo to the last. It often makes me wonder when the neglect starts and the caring ends.

Thanks for the kind words, friends! Ron I don't think that this was an intentional case of neglect or not caring, as much as lack of knowledge and some very unfortunate circumstances. When Bud sold the boat, it was to a very "nautical" guy who cared for her qiuite well. Jack, then sold it to a local judge who ran it for several years before he came down with Parkinson's disease. For a while then, he was unable to care for her properly. One of the annual maintenance chores was soaking the hull before launching the boat in the spring. This required filling the bilges and monitoring pretty regularly to make sure all the planking swelled properly. anyway, he decided that filling the bilges with pitch or tar would solve that aspect of the regualr routine. What that did, in fact was to plug all the limber holes and seal the moisture between the exterior paint and the tar....rersult...lots of rot along the keel. When he sold the boat, the new owner removed the keelson and was going to replace the keel, but then found a lot of the hull had also gone to rot. He had already pulled the cabin and engine to get at the keelson and keel so the weather then got to the rest of the hull. Soo long BOOMER! Al |

Al, It is always a pleasure to see what you have done and this restoration is an excellent example of your care given to a project. Love the name plate.

Thanks, Ken! Bud's dad named the boat.........said a name with two vowels in a row was good luck for a boat, and that a BOOMERANG always came back. That's something that a lot of boats on Lake Superior didn't do......come back. And Boomer always made harbor, desptite some treacherous noreasters! Al |
