| | #@*&%$!!!!!!! Computers!!!!! I did had an automatic update to my Trend Micro PC-Cillin the day before yesterday and ever since I've had one problem after another to my Microsoft Internet Explorer and today to my Outlook Express email program. I finally was able to get on line late last night after I figured out that the only way to do it was to disable the PC-Cillin firewall and activate the Microsoft Firewall. Then today when I went to check my email it kept crashing on the authorization process. I've restored to two weeks previous and reset all my settings to factory original and I'm still not getting emails.
Does anyone who has PC-Cillin have a similiar problem?
Does anyone have a suggestion besides trashing the #@!*%$ thing and starting over!

I had nothing but problems with outlook express.....I finally got tired of it and dumped it and went to mozilla thunderbird and firefox. much much better! I hate changing emails sites, you have to learn the procedures all over again but it was worth it. |

| | Re: #@*&%$!!!!!!! Computers!!!!! No one should still be using Internet Explorer.
Switching to Mozilla Firefox will remove 90% of all nasty internet-bad-stuff-infiltrations sent out by computer evil-doers.
Start with that switch; your life will be easier and your computer much, much safer...plus, it's free.

| | Re: #@*&%$!!!!!!! Computers!!!!! Well I know next to nothing about these things. But I went to Microsoft and used their spyware programs and filters, ran a few scans, got the updated version and everything seems to be back to normal. Fast as ever.Don't really know what I did,,maybe it's my version of hitting it with a hammer to make something work again,,but it seems to have fixed something. |

| | Re: #@*&%$!!!!!!! Computers!!!!! Eddy,
Don't feel bad. I don't know what gives with the antivirus programmers but their programs are becoming too large and use too much of the resources on the machine....system hogs.
I used Norton system works for years. Absolutely loved it and swore by it. I renewed on line and never had a problem. I tried putting a newer version on my mom's computer and the computer wouldn't run. It was sluggish and locked up all the time. I finally had to take the Norton off. Same thing with my husband's laptop. When the time came for me to buy a newer version and put it on, the same thing happened to me. I sent it back to them for a refund and went with a simpler program.....command antivirus. Life is much easier now. I also use the Adaware and Spybot free programs from the internet to fight off spyware.
I just recently took Trend Micro off of hubby's computer too. Not user friendly at all..... I will be taking his machine down to my computer guy to have command put on it.
Your funny popups could be the result of spyware that has gotten onto your machine. Everyone should run Adaware and Spybot to keep their system clean from spyware programs. |

What's this Command Antivirus? Can't say that I've seen it?
I had Spybot on my machine but PC-cillin wouldn't work with it and I had to take it off. I still have the download so that I can put it back on at any time.
By the way, my machine seems to be working much better since disabling the PC-Cillin firewall and enabling the Windows firewall.
You're right about the Norton, McAfee and PC-cillin being resource hogs. It use to be that you'd download an update and it was only a couple of KB. Now the norm is 3-4 mb. And my available system resources seems to be dwindling at an alarming rate. It sure ain't me!

| | Re: #@*&%$!!!!!!! Computers!!!!! Hi Eddy,
If you google it you will find a website for command antivirus. There is a paid version and a free version. My computer guy put it on my machine and I pay him $20 a year for it. Now I have a suspicion that it might be the free version but I don't care for the following reason. Any time I have the slightest problem with my machine, I take it to his shop and he does any adjustments needed and has yet to charge me a dime for it. I got a message once that there had been a "Thermal event" that caused it to shut down. I took it back to him and he opened up the case, gently blew compressed air into it just incase there had been dust bunny build up or something. He also checked out all the stuff inside and ran diagnostics on it. Spent quite a lot of time on it and didn't charge me.
Another time he got rid of some pesky program that I was having trouble with and also re installed command as I told him it had been giving me a little trouble with the updates. He said a file was corrupted and took the whole thing off and reinstalled it. It has run like a charm ever since. I swear by this outfit. They are the best. They built the computer for me last year.
So, if this happens to be the free version....$20 a year is a good investment anyhow..... They also sell F-Secure at the shop. It is supposed to be the absolute best protection on the market but it costs $50 a year to use it.
I think I can get buy with what I have. |

| | Re: #@*&%$!!!!!!! Computers!!!!! Totally different here, I have ran Internet explorer for years and not hd any problems with it. Update to the 7.0 and still no problems. Got it on 3 PCs and 2 laptops. However, I do update it when there is updates. Foxfire and Mozilla or whatever its name is would not run on the pcs and one laptop.
Guess you either have problems with Microsoft or you don't.
It also depens on how much memory you run . On the pcs are 1 1/2 gig mimory and on the laptops 2 gig and basicly that will runn just about anything a person would want to run.
I use to run Norton but eliminated Norton after 3 year and went to Grisoft AVG free edition. Never have had any problem with that anti-virus program. Run it on two PCs and one laptop and the little brides runs McAfee which we are about to eliminate it. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
