| | Re: Work In Progress Wlll--did not notice until just now that the pics I took of the hummingbird at class last night did not turn out, and now I have already started to paint so I can't retake them. However, since I had the camera out I did take pics of two other carving projects and I just uploaded those into the Animal and Bird section.
Guess I better get buring something new )

I wish I could join the fun but I am just reading and hoping to learn something, it still confuses me to read ,that somebody carves and burns and then again just burns ,is this a choice of the person? or the work they have to do to achieve the result?
Thanks

| | Re: Work In Progress Alice,
I think it depends on the pattern, the project and your mood at the time. A carving can take several weeks or more - a burning might take one week. Many carvers use wood burning to give fine detailing as in duck decoys that they have carved. A wood burner can cut much finer lines much faster. Sometimes you will do a little wood burning to clean up the fuzzies and fibers left in a carving. And, as in Mottles (Kathy's) latest work the burning adds shading and coloring accents to a carving.
I think sometimes that it's more a natural branching out of working with wood to experiment in the other wood crafts ... burning, carving, scroll saw and furniture making ...

| | Re: Work In Progress Great looking Canada Goose over a pond. I passed just such a scene as we drove back from Moncton to Miramichi, along the coast. Bays and harbours are full of resting Geese, on their way South. We have a wonderful choris everymorning this week, of formations of them going over the house early, just after /during sun rise, just when I walk my dog. They fly low, as the river is only 400 meters away. The mouth of the Bay is black with duck and geese at present as are many grain fields in the area.

| | Re: Work In Progress Alice - I needed to think a bit about your comment. For me I started out as a carver and only did burning to create fur and hair. Then I discovered pyrography on flatwork. I got hooked. Right now I have a bedroom suite that I'm creating and so far only have the top of the stool burned. Since I'm moving to the BC coast I've decided to wait until I get there before making the headboard, night stands and the picture for over the bed, (less to move). I'm using a celtic theme which I really love the look of. I discovered pyrography on flat work thanks to Lee Valley asking me to teach it as well as teaching carving. By needing to learn enough to stay ahead of my students, as well as coming up with patterns and needing to inspire them, I found out just how much I do enjoy it. I still carve, just not as often and after the class in January I won't be teaching carving anymore, but rather focusing on my pyrography.
I think it really becomes a personal choice and taste issue. As well as finding our own niche artisically. Anyway, I hope that helped to answer your question, at least as to how I came to prefer the burning. Bonnie - I'm really looking forward to hearing how you make out. Now if only I could find some wax remover so I fix mine. Sheesh! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
