I want to make some quick necklaces for cheap "impulse sales" at shows. I want to burn glyphs, runes, and native symbols on them and then drill and string them with leather lace and a couple beads. My problem is finding a few dozen small wooden nickels or dogtag shapes to burn on. Any suggestions? |

if you have a scrollsaw you could cut4 or 5 at a time of dogtags using 1/8 inch finnish birch ply..if you were in the service you probably have your dogtags around to trace, if not holler, I can send you a tracing of the outline of one. Smile

Cut wafers off of a dowel. Make a stop for your saw and hold the dowel in a V block so it dont roll and in a few minutes you have a bunch of them. Goody

I could make my own but the extra time spent cutting and sanding would erase any profit potential. I am trying to find something that I can drill, burn, and assemble in 15-20 minutes and sell in the $3 - $5 "impulse" range. |

Although it might cut into profits, look at michaels or hobby lobby, in the wooden craft section, some of the craft stores have grab bags of wooden knobs shapes dowel pins wheels and axles such mix and match bagged by the mnf, the last one i bought was under $5.00 and had lots of wooden slugs in it you could use for nickles. good hunting If you had a cutoff or band-saw saw you could slice a tree branch in thin 3/16" coins, then wood burn them,, just some cheap ideas. Doll house shingles come in oblong shapes. They are thick enough to burn and strong enough to put a hole through, but they aren't very heavy. Hanging them on leather may be kind of strange looking. A thinner type of string with the beads to help weight them down would work. I think we got ours at a place like Michaels. Look in the stuff with the doll house kits. Thor |

Check this Web Page http://www.wooden-nickel.com/specials/generic/. About a quarter of the way down is what you want.

Cliff, I bought a wood burner about a year ago that has my signature to burn onto carvings. I believe the head is interchangable. You could have several heads with different signs, emblems or messages and using the wooden nickels turn them out in about a minute each. I think I found mine new on ebay with the custom work of a signature included in the price. Wade |

Bill, THANK YOU!! I had visited the site but couldn't find the blank nickels. Wade, Since I do Solar Pyrography I will be burning these the same way. ( Sunny day + magnifying glass + steady hands = Solar Pyro ) Thanks for the suggestion though. |
