| | Re: sign work Hi Mel, I use either a tiny ball tip (.004 or .008) or a small writing tip. The ball tips flow better without catching in the wood and work great for cursive writing.

| | Re: sign work There is a micro writing tip that is very nice for burning your name or initials on the front. On the back of the work I sign with a soft #2 pencil and add the date and any other important information. I might note if the work was a commission, a portrait with the person's name or a special gift for someone.
Right now people will know for whom you created the work and who you are. Many decades from now when someone is cleaning out Grandma's attic and they discover your wood burning carefully stored away in tissue paper they will enjoy finding your name and the info on the back
So consider the extra signing for future generations ... who knows ... one of our works just might make it on Antique Roadshow on day ...

| | Re: sign work Hi Susan,
Thanks for the cool suggestion about putting the extra information on back. I sign my work front and back and sometimes put the title on but now I will definitely start putting further tidbits on. That is an awesome idea.
My friend is fortunate enough to have two burns from his great grandfather that were done with a hot poker and lamp. They are too cool but they don't have the information on the back and that would be an added bonus.
I will pass this on to him, he might want to burn the information on himself to preserve it for the next generation.
Blessings,
Tina |

| | Re: sign work Tina, Mike, my beloved hubby, and I were just talking about how wood burning would hold up over the decades. Mike was considering the oxidizing and patina of the wood and if that would over power the burning. My thoughts were that the burning would darken right along with the patina.
So, when you talk with your fiend please ask how strong the burning is. I am very curious. If she would let you post a scan I would be most grateful.
Thanks, Susan |

Thanks, Susan | Hi Susan,
Yes you are correct the burning darkened along with the patina of the wood. He brings them and displays them with his work at shows. No problem, I should see him on Tuesday at open carving so I will ask then. |

Mel - I use the extra small writing tip for signing and I find it allows me to sign really small when I want to or if the piece suits I can sign it larger. I used to use just the regular writing tip but after discovering this extra small one, I've changed and much prefer it.

| | Re: sign work I make my own tips and have never learned the names and what it looks like. I have always signed the front and back with information for family. On a comission, who I am with name, address and phone #. Wouldn't hurt these days to include e-mail address. All for advertizing my work and historical data. Semper Fi
