Default Pyrography on "Other" Substrates

I think it would be interesting to find out what things you've used for your bunings, besides wood. What are the pro's and cons, difficulty level and challenges?

I've burned on tauga nuts, leather and gourds so far and didn't like any of them. They really gunk up the pens and smell lousy...at least that's my opinion. They also require different temperature settings than wood but you have to experiment with your own burner to see what works best for you. With leather it MUST be vegetable tanned. As for skill level. Well I have a 12 year old student/customer who is doing a great job on tagua nuts and leather already so if a 12 year old can do it........

My thing is that the smell of wood is what attracted me to burning and it has never lost it's attraction. I love the aesthetic quality of wood and the burning on the wood. So, when I do a burning it probably will always be on wood and when I want to do a painting or drawing I'll use other materials.

By burning do you mean on purpose or accidently... Ha! Ha! I'm with Nedra. Wood seems to be the most pleasant media to work with. I've worked with leather and I really didn't like it.

My favorite is wood products, also....plaques, benches, chairs, poles...just about anything wood. I have done burnings on thick pieces of leather strippings and a large indian/eagle burning on a very thin, smooth piece of pigskin leather, but I'm with Nedra also.....it stinks, and the soft pliable skin was terrible to work with. I'll stick to wood. I, too, love the smell of the wood.....my attraction both for burnings and carvings. Bonnie

Just wood for me so far, looking to do some antler and bone when I get back to the world. Tagua nuts also look appealing to try.
