Default New Talking Stick

Hi everyone,

As I mentioned before, I really enjoy the talking sticks so I've done another. This one is with a bear and bear tracks. Hope you like it and thank you for looking.

Nice job Lindy! Tracks are a popular subject to put on the talking stick and not too difficult to burn....easier than an animal. The bear is a good theme as well as the buffalo, eagle, coyote, etc. Kind of fun to do

Michael,
sticks are ceremonial with the native peoples of the US and Canada. They were usually held by the chief of the tribe when he is in council. The native law is that only the person who holds the stick can speak. When he or she has finished speaking then it is passed to the next person and they talk. That way everyone was heard without interuption. I use it when I am teaching younger children in school it really works I think we can learn from the native people I think they should use these in debates among our polititions

Here is a description of the talking stick from my website: http://southwestwoodcrafts.com/talkingsticks.htm

As Colin mentioned, some teachers today use them in the class room. I guess the added benefit is they can whack the offender over the head with it also

That is truely beautiful and has that special home-made artistry that makes something so unique. Great work!

Wow, thanks everyone!
Vic - I'm using willow which grows quite freely and easily accessable here.

Pyrographer - Thanks for the invite but I like the milder climate up here, or at least where I plan on moving within the next year. Our First Nation culture here recognize the totems I'm using as they are the ones the most relate to. I plan on putting some Haida designs on some of them too, which will require colour. They should be fun!

Michael they're also known as prayer sticks which can be given to those during a time of need or as a get-well gift.

Colin - nice seeing you here - how are you doing with your fight in city hall? Have you shown them the error of their ways yet? Thanks for helping out and giving some of the info on talking sticks.

Bill, thanks for adding the link to more info on these - you're the one that got me addicted.

Again, I really appreciate the encouragement!

Lindy
