I actually made something similar for a theatre production we did once...the director wanted lights to rise dramatically from the rear of the theatre, not just pop on...that was my inspiration for suggesting it!

Yes, sometimes "low tech" is the best solution My first thought was to use triac controllers, but figured this approach was the easiest solution. I used it years ago and it did a nice job of regulating a fixed WH burning pen. Someone on my forum mentioned that Home Depot sold a self container unit but I haven't founf it here...
